St. Patrick's Day

Do you do anything special to celebrate?

I'm of Irish decent so our family always make a traditional Irish meal- corned beef, cabbage, shepherd's pie (which is more British than Irish), soda bread, tons of potatoes, Harp's beer, etc.  I have carried on the tradition since my husband and I moved in together.  It has become something my husband looks forward to every year.  Two years ago we started inviting our friends over for the dinner and they love it too.  It's the only time of year that I put the leaf in our table!

Re: St. Patrick's Day

  • The only thing we do here is the pinching thing.  I've met several people who weren't born here and had never heard of it so I guess that's not a nationwide thing.  I don't think I know anyone who really celebrates.  Sounds like fun though.

LoL, I must be one of those people.  Pinching thing? What's that?

It's a shame, living in Chi-Town, that we're not doing more.  But honestly, we're just not that big into getting smashed a) at all, and b) in the middle of the workweek. : )  Maybe I'll take DH to a pub for dinner, or something, but by Wednesdays, we're usually couch potatoes.

I'd love to make Corned Beef and Cabbage (*droooooooooooooooools*) but DH won't eat it.  So it's not worth the expense just for me.  Maybe we'll do ruebens instead - lol, does that count?

  • I am irish (hence the red hair and ghostly skin)

I'm usually at the elem. school on st. patricks day, so I wear a big fluffy green skirt and a green bow in my hair! Last year I made corned beef for the first time, I wont be doing that this year though since I have gone veg! I guess I'll have to make some irish potato soup or something

  • We're not doing anything big because of work and whatever... I hate when St Patty's Day is during the week! And I'm not eating meat because of lent... so no corned beef for me. I'll have to make some soda bread or something...
  • I always forget about St. Pats....We are hopefully going on "vacation" on Wed so I will be packing/shopping on tuesday.  Or showing up at Nicole's house...  Big Smile
  • lol.  Every year on St. Patrick's Day EVERYONE is supposed to wear at least 1 green thing.  If you see someone not wearing green, you're supposed to pinch them.  Even if you don't know the person.

My tennis coach in high school moved here from NJ and she'd never heard of it so she freaked out when everyone started pinching her.

Haha, awesome.  I can understand how that would be weird for people who have never heard of this tradition!

    Reminds me of a story....

When I was still living at home with my parents, we had a vicar at our church (a vicar is like a "student teacher pastor").  My brother, who is a pastor, jokingly told my dad that it's customary to tickle the vicar after he gives his first sermon.  My dad, not realizes that it was a joke, did just that on the way out of church that morning....

....talking about awkward... EmbarrassedStick out tongue

  • I won't do anything on actual St. Patty's day but the town where my cabin is does this crazy insane St. Patty's Day parade right down the main drag the weekend after (when it falls during the week).  HUNDREDS of people show up for it.  The cops sorta look the other way because people could definitely get busted for open container!  It is great people watching for sure.  HOPEFULLY it'll be nice and warm this year.  Last year was gorgeous!
  • Oh, and can I just say that I inwardly cringe every year when they dye the Chicago River green for St. Patty's?  I mean, it's gross enough as it is... you really don't have to go there...

(this image, by the way, is not color enhanced.  It's really that color:)

  • Whoa!  They dye the river green!?!  That's nuts!

My hubs is doing the veggie thing for lent too so I am making a vegetable shepherd's pie instead of the normal meat one.

Everyone is welcome to come to my house on St. Paddy's Day to eat corned beef and cabbage!

That kind of behavior could get a girl killed in these parts! Wink

I am not Irish, despite my fabulous gaelic name, but it is the one day of the year that I pretend I am!

  • Gah!  Reason #234 why I miss St. Louis: I will be missing the Dogtown St. Patrick's Day Parade; lots of green, lots of beads, lots of Irish families, and lots of beer.  If you're lucky, you'll catch the beads with a shot glass for your flask filled with Irish whiskey!

I need to find me some corned beef to make or go out.  I wonder if I can get some green beer here?  I wonder if there is an Irish pub around?  I need to do some research!

  • I don't know that they'd be any worse for the wear to be honest.  That river is sorta soupy looking on a good day!

No... apparently not.  You might be able to find some news reports on dying the Chicago River green on youtube, or something.

It is Chicago, though, so don't believe everything you hear.  That river is a carcinogen soup on a good day, as witty pointed out.

  • Ohhh ok, gotcha! I have never been to Chicago..im sheltered.

  • wow....neon green river.  That's a little over the top to me.
  • We usually have some kind of party but with it being on Wednesday this year that may not take place. We will have a green beer or two though and I always wear green. I have an awesome green velvet jacket that I wear every year.
