Yesterday I got a call from an elem. school. They want to interview me on Monday for a 3rd grade position that starts April 4 until the end of the year. Apparently, the full-time teacher is leaving. This would be GREAT because I could gain experience and they might keep me for the upcoming school year. Plus, the county pays well!
30 minutes later I got a call from a tutoring place that I had submitted my resume into. I called them back and set up an interview for Monday afternoon. Should I tell them that there's a chance I might be taking a full-time position, or just wait until they offer me the job and I know for sure if I got the other job or not? This job wouldnt pay as much.
THEN, this morning another tutoring company called me that I had given my resume to and they want to set up an interview. I feel like if I go to these interviews I should tell them there's a chance I might not be able to do it. Should I? Mom says I shouldnt tell them anything and act like I would take it, until I know for sure about the 3rd grade job. I have never had this happen and I just dont want to lie to people!
Re: what do i do??
I agree with your mom. You might not get the elementary position (although I've got my fingers crossed for you!), so you wouldn't want to already put yourself at a disadvantage for the other positions. Aren't there very few teaching positions in FL right now?
I would go to the interviews, be excited about all of them, and worry about what to say after you have 3 offers! Good luck!
Listen to your mom.
You don't know how things are going to pan out, so as far as you know, all of these jobs are possibilities. Just because a job looks like a sure thing or best opportunity doesn't mean it is. As far as job interviewing goes, companies realize without you ever saying anything that even if they offer you a job, you may turn it down. If you're looking for a job, competition is kind of a given.
Keep your mouth shut and your game face on! Go get 'em!

Listen to your mom!! And the PPs! Definitely don't tell them anything about your other interview.
It's very common when interviewing for jobs to be weighing your options and going on more than just one interview. If you tell them at the interview that you may not take the job, they won't take you as seriously and your chances probably be reduced. And then what if you don't get the teaching job or the tutoring job?
And a job offer is just that- an OFFER, not a subpoena, you should not feel bad about turning it down at all. You have to do what's best for YOU and that means doing your best at both interviews and having all the options you can.
I'm going to disagree slightly with the salary thing based on what I've encountered working Career Services. It's usually considered proper to wait for them to bring up the salary/benefits, which could happen during the interview or the time of the offer. That doesn't mean that you absolutely shouldn't ask first, but just keep that in mind.
If you get an offer for one and you get the salary/benefit information from them without having anything to compare it to, tell them you would like to consider their offer/talk it over with the family, etc., and will get back to them in a few days (i.e. less than a week). That will give the other places time to get back to you, and perhaps you could play the game of counter-offers.
BTW, check out the 9-5 board. They're a great resource. There's always lots of interview/salary questions on there.
Just seconding (thirding...tenthing?) what the other ladies have said. Definitely don't say anything about the other positions and weigh out all your options!
How exciting! My fingers are crossed for you.

Back in the days of good economies, I would advise you to let them know that you're doing lots of interviewing...that's always the position I took. They'd ask if I had any other offers and I'd say that I was actively interviewing and looking for the right fit.
These days, interview as if it's your best offer. Once you secure the teaching job, then you can let the others know. That's just my 2 cents.
