Would this look okay? D&R related again
Here's my DR (standing from the LR). I'm keeping the grayish paint for now and the white curtains stay.

I'm thinking of this table/chair set:

It's smaller than what the seller has now, and I'm afraid it will look dwarfed in how big the room is.
What color area rug underneath, and what size?
Focusing on decor takes my mind off all the stress of the other stuff I can't control until closing. :-/ Thanks!!

It looks like they have a longer table in there currently. If you go shorter, the ends of the room will feel less filled, but you could balance that with a bench or shelf below that window.
What abou a really graphic rug like this:

I would lean toward gray/blues, blacks and beiges with the gray. Or you could lighten it with cream and a light blue.
I like this one too:

Overstock is a great place to look because the $2.95 shipping applies to large items like rugs too.
If you go smaller could you add another peice of furniture like a buffet/sideboard?
I think the color will work nicely in the room but I agree that it might be small on its own. Is it something you already own?
I dont know how much entertaining you do but one thing that I really hate is the fact that I bought a DR table with only 4 chairs (we dont really have a DR its part of the LR so I didnt have a lot of space) but we are always having to get out card table chairs and squeezing in. I will not buy another table that doesnt seat at least 6 on a regular basis and am hoping for leaves to extend a table to 10 for holidays.

If it's a formal dining room would get a table that can seat more than 4. It's nice to have table extenders when you have company over.
I have to say that I agree with the need to have seating for more than 4, especially if you're buying a piece that you plan to have for awhile.
That said, I don't think that piece is too small for the room (having seen the room in person!). I think the most important thing would be finding the right sized rug. My OCD personality would find a rug that splits the size of the room vs size of the table ratio directly in half. If the table (w/chairs) is 4' wide and the room is 10' wide, I'd buy a rug that was 7' wide and center it all under that beautiful chandelier. Having the right proportions will make all the difference.
Yeah, I'm fearful of not having enough seating should I happen to entertain (which I've never done!). I like those rugs from overstock!
Eventually we'll add more DR furniture like a sideboard or buffet, but that will probably have to wait. I'm already getting anxious at our upfront costs. :-/

Take your time at finding/buying pieces. No one says you have to fill up your entire house right away! We finally just new bedroom furniture and we've been in our house for 5 years!

Absolutely! We'll have an empty dining room when we move in and I don't see us buying furniture for it for at least a year. The real tragedy would be if you rushed to buy something now and found out in 2 months it didn't fit your needs.
our dining room is completely empty. We have no plans of buying furniture anytime soon... it just isnt in the budget right now.

That's a while different situation. I would totally want to buy something too!

Then I think you should make this your first house furniture purchase. I think you should get a big table--it will probably collect more junk, but you can always have junk on one end and eat on the other.
Every furniture store has a sale over 3 day weekends. Go see what you like in store and buy when the store has an advertised sale.
Then once you have the table and chairs, get a rug that's big enough so that all the chairs are on the rug while they are pulled out and in use. You don't want a too small rug that leaves half the chair on and half off.

Great. Thanks so much for the help, everyone!
I think I'll go look at my local furniture place soon, get some ideas on pricing, and look for something that could be extended and the option to more chairs. Just wondering if 5x8 rug would be big enough. :-/
Stay tuned later or tomorrow for an exciting question on LR accent colors!!

I think I either have that exact same table and chairs or something very similiar. If its the same one I have, its a great breakfast area/kitchen table, but would be a little small for a formal diningroom table.
If I was looking for a formal diningroom table, I'd want something that could seat at least 6...preferably with optional leaves so I could play with the size if need be.
For colors and such I think you have great ideas though, wanna come decorate our place?

THIS! The start up costs of getting a home can be HUGE. There will be things you don't anticipate that will come up.
Another thing to consider when buying furniture is how long you intend to be in the home. We planned poorly and will now be downsizing...and giving away stuff we'd rather not because of it. Just a thought.
