Hi. We are having an open house type house warming party and I need help with my menu. This is what I've got so far:
Meatballs in the crockpot w/ rolls to make sandwiches
Veggie Tray
Fruit Tray
Tortilla Chips/Salsa
Chips
Buffalo Chicken Dip
Crackers/Cheese/Pepperoni Tray
Re: Help with my menu
Forgot the desserts. Thanks. Good call about the chicken.
The majority of your menu involves dips, so I would either get rid of a few or pull in some other elements like canapes (they don't have to be fussy) and skewers. Also, vary up your textures. Right now, everything is going to have a creamy/soft mouth feel. Maybe add some additional crunch that isn't a chip (spring rolls come to mind).
For the meatballs, are you trying to serve those as the main item, as in a lunch, or are you trying to keep the party in the finger food realm? They're probably not the neatest thing to serve and I foresee a lot of guests having messy fingers. If you're expecting your guests to stand, they might wind up being problematic.
If you're trying to do all finger foods, this won't really work, but little individual cups (think tin foil cupcake liners) of a tabouli/couscous salad or (and this goes over like gangbusters) cups of homemade mac n'cheese. If you do the mac n'cheese in the tinfoil cups, you can sprinkle some bread crumbs and melted butter on top and throw them under the broiler for a minute (but just barely a minute. I've scorched these hardcore before by trying to get just a little crispier of a topping). Basically, anything in a cupcake liner makes people happy (I've done fruit salad with a dollop of cream cheese dip on top, chocolate mousse, and, of course, cupcakes).
Also, think salty-sweet. Buy some sea salt caramels, but prepare to be addicted. Pretzel rods dipped in white of dark chocolate and sprinkled with colored sugar (to match your decor? Probably over the top, but I have done this for a bridal shower). And candied nuts sprinkled with kosher salt just as the candy part starts to get really sticky are so good to just snack on that you'll want to make a huge batch to keep on hand (and you can pretend they're healthy because they're almonds. just ignore that whole sugar and salt part
have fun, and congrats on this major milestone (i.e., buying a house)!
