Moving to Dayton

I'm hoping this is the best place to post this, let me know if it's not. My H and I will be moving there this summer and I was wanting to know what areas are the best to be looking at in the way of living. My H will be working up at Wright-Patt and we're not 100% sure we want to be on base.

Also what is there to do around there? Good places to eat? I know that we'll end up in Cincinnati a lot with how close it is, so I'd love feedback about there as well.

What exactly should we expect for weather throughout the seasons?

Any suggestions or information that you can give would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

Re: Moving to Dayton

  • We have friends in Oakwood, Kettering, Springboro, and Centerville.  I also had a friend live downtown, but she was sad there wasn't much grass for her dog!

As far as weather...where are you from?  I mean, we get all 4 seasons.  Rainy spring, hot summer, brisk fall, very cold winter.  Seems obvious for the midwest? (not to be mean, but that seems like a weird question!)

It depends where you live as to where to eat.  If you live in the Kettering or Oakwood area, I think you'll find the best local places.  Kettering just opened a brand new mall called The Greene and it has tons of shopping and nice dining.  Dayton has it's own culture of dining and entertainment--I don't think that you'll find that you have to travel to Cincinnati.  We have a great time visiting friends there.

  • Yup, this board is for Dayton too!  I live in a historic district just outside of downtown Dayton.  The City of Dayton itself has been so-so in the last few years.  I'm really only familar with the area south of downtown.  If you want an older urban home I'd suggest the Oregon District.  The Patterson Park/Shroyer Park area is near the University of Dayton & is pretty nice.  Kettering & Oakwood both border the area.  Kettring has a wide range of housing, from little 4 room houses to huge homes.  Oakwood is a very nice older city.  It sometimes has a reputation of being exclusive but the school system is one of the best in the state if not the county.  Beavercreek is a very nice area just east of the base.  Again, really good schools.  Fairborn & Riverside surround the base.  They're more working class but still some nice homes.  You'll probably find quite a few USAF people in those areas.  If you want to distance yourself from base life I'd probably look at Beavercreek.

Things to do-Beavercreek has a nice mall, as does Centerville.  The Air Force musuem is on base & free.  The Dayton Art Institute is also free.  Columbus is only a little over an hour away from the base.  There are a ton of ethnic restaurants around the base or in Beavercreek.

Weather-It's 60 and a little rainy right now, less than a month ago we had over a foot of snow on the ground.  The weather changes constantly here!  Summers are humid & mid 80s.  You'll start feeling uncomfortable in late June.  Late July & August can get even hotter.  Fall & spring are nice but unpredictable.  You could go from snow to warm weather in just a week.  Winters are usually not too bad until January.

You should also post on the baby board (link above).  It's more active than this board.

  • Thank you for the insight. I asked about weather, because no one bothered to mention one major detail with where we live currently...the crazed amounts of wind that comes through in the spring. Which pushes sand through every crack and crevice in the house.

I'm a planner, so all of this helps me a lot! Thank you!

  • No sand in Ohio!  Lots of pollen though.  The geography around the Great Miami River traps all the gunk and makes spring miserable if you have allergies.

Great to know! I'll be stocking up on my allergy meds!

I think Davessweatpea did a good job of telling you about the area. I live and Beavercreek and really like it, our first choice was Bellbrook but happened to find a house in Beavercreek first.  I have also lived in Fairborn and Huber Heights.  You have to look around before you buy in either of those, there are some decent areas, and some not so good areas.  Oakwood I think probably has the best schools in the area.

The area around the base is very diverse.  Wright State University is right there too, so there is a large student population.  Lots of restaurants of different kinds, shopping both in Beavercreek at Fairfield Commons and the Greene.  The museums were already mentioned.  If you are looking for apartments and not a house, be careful around WSU.  Students mostly live around there and in parts of Fairborn, so it can get noisy.

  • Yes, I would avoid any place that has lots of students!  I don't know how WSU students are but UD has a rep as a party school, so avoid anything really close to the campus!  Huber Heights is north, near I-70, Bellbrook is in the same county as the base but south.  You'd have to commute on the interstate to get to the base from either neighborhood.

Come back if you have any more questions!

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you! I like having an idea on where I am moving and such, but life with the military doesn't always offer that so this means a lot!

I guess one big question I forgot would be if anyone has vet and groomer recommendations for our dog. We want to make sure that he will be all squared away when we move there!

  • We lived in Dayton for over a year when we got our first dog.  I would highly recommend Bigger Road Veterinary Clinic on Bigger Road.  Should be easy to look up and find their number.  They have a team of vets, grooming in-house, etc. and we really miss going there but it's too far of a drive now that we've moved back to Cincy.  I believe we always saw Marty for grooming and usually the younger, female vet-- however, I don't think she does surgeries so we were open to any of them when he was neutered and Dr. Talmadage (spelling may be off) did a great job! Hope that helps!
  • Bigger Rd is a good clinic.  I used to take my dogs there but my vets (married couple) left & opened a clinic near the old Chevy plant in Moraine.  It's called Hills & Dales vet clinic.  My male dog is a real stinker & I had to go through a few clinics before I found someone who can deal with him.  I liked them so much I followed them to the new clinic!  They're not cheap (Bigger Rd isn't either) but they're both really great places.

  • I rec the Airway Animal Clinic on Colonel Glenn Hwy.  I started using them last year and the vet and the techs are fantastic.  Their prices are also reasonable (I used Banfield before and they were terrible).   The others mentioned I also have heard great things about, Airway was just a lot closer to me.
  • Back with another question. We've been looking at houses for sale online to get ideas and are seeing a lot in the Belmont area. What are your thoughts on this area?
