BR: Going off the pill...

Hi,I am usually over on the wedding forum as I get married in 3 weeks but I have a question for you girls.  For the girls who were on the pill and are TTC, pregnant or already a Mom.  How long did it take you to ovulate after going off the pill?  Thanks!Lindsey

Re: BR: Going off the pill...

  • Hi Lindsey!  Nice to see you over here.  Everyone is different so take my experience with a grain of salt.  I ovulated my very first cycle after stopping BCP (I was on it a little over 8 years).  Here's my chart in case you want to see how my cycles played out.  I was so worried I wouldn't ovulate for months after stopping BCP, especially because I remember being irregular before starting BCP.  HTH and let us know if you have any TTC questions...the water seems very fertile over here.  Smile
  • Welcome, and good luck on your upcoming wedding! So exciting.

Anyways, I stopped taking the pill in August 2009, and I did ovulate from the beginning, although I did find that my cycles are really long (like 40 days and counting). I don't remember how regular I was before...I've been on the pill since high school, so I'm not sure if my body is still adjusting, or if I just regularly have long cycles.

I found that temping the first few cycles really helped me to know that I was ovulating. Also, the undeniable pain I felt, lined up with my chart, to signal the ovulation too...so that's a fun discovery.

I find alot of answers to these kinds of questions on the Getting Pregnant board as well.

  • Hi! This was my number one question before going off BCP as well.  My cycles also went right back to normal and I O'd right away as well.  On BCP my cycles were about 28 days long, after going off they remained the same but 2 cycles before our BFP it was a few days longer, but then I got pregnant the next month.  I used OPK's and discovered I wasn't O'ing until around CD17/18 or so as well.  Good luck :)

  • Hey there,  I remember you from the Knot...I absolutely loved all of your eng. pics, but my fav is definitely your siggy on the train tracks!  Can't wait to see your wedding pics!  Please share them over here too!

As for your question, I was on bc pills from over a decade when we started TTC & it took us about 4 - 5 months to get pg.  I wasn't charting for the first 2 or 3 months so I don't know if I really ovulated or not, but I seemed to have normal periods (just light ones).  I only charted for 2 months, but it did seem like I was clearly ovulating.  I honestly think my body just wasn't ready after so many years on bc pills, but I have heard of girls who were pg 2 weeks after getting off the pill so I guess everyone is really different.

  • I ovulated the first month, but not the second (according to OPKs).  We conceived five months after going off the pill (trying each of those months).  My cycles were a bit irregular, though.

  • Everyone experience will be a little different so take what I say with a grain of salt. I stopped taking BC pills in late August '08(Aunt Flow came August 31st. ) and I got my BFP  Sept. 28th. So yeah I was one of those who took no time at all. I had been on BC since I was 17 so that was a good 9 years.  My OB as well as myself were very surprised that I got pregnant so quickly. But I was warned that whe I went of BC to REALLY BE READY!!!
  • everyone is different, hopefully the cycles return to normal right away.

My experience is totally not the norm, I knew I probably had hormone and fertility issues because and my cycles had been irregular since my teen years.  Many GYNs just put me on BCP to "cure" me so I was on them off and on for over 10 years.  Once going off them for good I didn't ovulate for over a year.  I'm sure that ovulation was brought on by intense acupuncture, herbal therapy, and mayan abdominal massage (non-traditional fertility treatments).

  • Congrats on your wedding!

I was afraid that since I had been on the pill for nearly 17 yrs straight that it would take awhile for my body to regulate itself.  However, I ovulated either the first or second month I was off the pill, because the second month I was pregnant!  So it can happen rather quickly... but everyone is different.  Good luck TTC!

  • congrats, looking forward to seeing more of you over here soon :)

i don't have any advice b/c i was using nuvaring, not the pill, and well... turns out i don't ovulate on my own anyway even though my charts made it look like i did... but i just wanted to say good luck TTC! :)

  • I had a period while I was on BC (Implanon, not the pill, but same hormones), had my implant removed, and ovulated nearly immediately. It's unusual, but it happens.

I don't want to be a downer, but I would be careful if this happens to you - I miscarried with our first, and my doctor suspected it was because even though my body got on the ovulation train right away, it simply wasn't prepared to actually host a pregnancy (my uterine lining was probably too thin). So if I was going to do it again, I'd wait at least one cycle before TTCing after you go off BC, regardless of how quickly you ovulate. I hope that makes sense!

  • Aloha!  Welcome to the board!  The water here is quite fertile!

I went off BCP in January 2009 and ovulated right away (I was charting)...I charted two cycles and we started TTC for two more and got our BFP!

  • Thanks Ladiers!  Great responses and thanks for the insight.  I went off the pill last month even though I don't really want to be pregnant until after the wedding.  I figured I would give my body a month or 2 to adjust before we start really trying.  Hope your luck rubs off on me!
