You live in upstate NY? Do you like it? Be honest: how cold does it get there?

In early Nov. Dh & I will be moving there. As a native Texan who has seen snow TWICE in her life, I am terrified of the cold! lol.

Re: Panda

  • Hey, I'm actually from Western NY (Buffalo) but that's not an option on TK. I don't live there anymore, actually.  Anyway, the weather is the same between Western and Upstate.  I LOVE it there.  There are four distinct seasons, not just "hot" and "less hot" like you get in the South.  Where specifically are you moving?  The weather can vary a little bit depending.

From a Buffalo standpoint, we have never hit 100, the record is 99 in the summer.  In the winter what you need to worry about is the windchill, not the actual temperature.  Dress for the windchill and dress in layers. It's not often you see the actual temperature go below 10 or so, though when the windchill gets in the negative 10s that feels pretty bitter.  Those are extremes, most often it's not that cold.

The thing is, you will acclimate.  After winter is over and it hits about 50 in the spring, it's going to feel gloriously warm.  Then after the summer and fall comes and it hits 50 you will feel cold.  But you acclimate every season.

Driving is going to be a lot different for you.  From what I hear in TX (my uncle used to live there) one inch of snow and everyone is off the road.  Not so in Buffalo, we drive through it.  Driving in the winter is an acquired skill, just take it slow.  Winter will be starting within weeks of you getting there, usually right after Thanksgiving.

It's weird that you say you're moving to Upstate NY when DH and I are going to be spending 6 weeks in Dallas starting at the end of August.  But then from the first week in Oct to mid Nov we'll be in Buffalo again.  Let me know if I can help with anything else.

  • Thank you so much! That was more than i get from google so far :) lol. DH is in the Army, and we are stationed at Fort Drum. Apparently it is 80 miles north of Syracuse.

It snowed (we had flurries) on campus one day last winter and the entire campus shut down. So, yes, any sign of snow and we Texans are bundled up in parkas and avoiding leaving the house. haha. I had not thought about driving...I guess I will learn quickly!

  • Oh ok, I've never been up that way.  If I'm not mistaken, my cousin's husband was stationed at Fort Drum, though he's currently in Afghanistan.
