(Sorry this is so long. I made mental notes all night about things to tell you guys about.
)
When I got there last night I found out that the league is brand new. They haven't even split off into teams yet. I was kind of nervous so that made me feel a lot better. Everyone is on the same level as far as derby skills go.
The women who are organizing it have met with a team from TN and got all the training materials. So once there are enough people they'll start training everyone. Right now it's just a Thursday night free skate.
The lady at the counter asked us if we wanted speed skates or regular skates. I asked her what the difference was and she said, "A dollar." So I got speed skates b/c that's what everyone else was getting. The major differences that I can tell is they cut off at your ankle and the wheels aren't as tight as what I'm used to. So I'm sure they'll go faster, but I didn't test my boundaries too much last night.
It's been a long, long time since I skated. I didn't fall down. Yay me! But I used to be able to do all kinds of things on wheels that my brain doesn't seem to remember. Also, it's exhausting. I didn't think it would be too bad b/c I run. I was wrong.
But I had a lot of fun & I'm plannng on going back next week. I'm also planning on peer pressuring some other friends into coming with me.
Squesh, I didn't break anything! (yet) But my ankle was killing me by the end of the night. If I had had surgery on mine like you (which I barely escaped) I wouldn't be able to do it. I think I chould still skate, but I'd be the woman going really, really slow and holding on to the rail.
Oh! one more thing: There was a woman there that had a serious mom hair cut & was wearing corduroy overalls. I was going kind of slow on purpose, but she kept lapping me. So my goal next week is to at least keep up with ovealls lady.
