Vitamins

So what do you know about vitamins and what do you take, if any?

Currently, I'm taking a multivitamin, but I keep hearing more and more people say that you should take additional supplements, like Vitamin D and Omega-3 (fish oil), in addition to the multivitamin.  I would think the multivitamin would be enough and now I'm confused.

Re: Vitamins

  • I don't know much about vitamins, to be honest.

I used to take C, E, A, B, and Fish Oils... and then at one point I did a multivitamin.

    Now I just take prenatals.

I think that what you take is dependent on your lifestyle. For example: if you have circulation trouble, take Fish Oil. If you want to have nice skin and reduce scarring, take Vitamin E.

I don't know all that much either. I've been taking a womens daily multi vitamin for a while and thought that'd be good enough. I'm still on them now instead of switching to a prenatal.

  • I am on prenatals that have fish oil in them. Fish oil has fatty acids that are needed for brain development in babies, so they're important for pregnant and nursing women.

  • The omega fatty acids also help raise your HDL (good cholesterol). I take 2 grams of fish oil everyday for that reason (heart disease runs in my dad's family). Since I started taking the fish oil, my HDL climbed up to 63 - 30 is the minimum recommended level.

I take a OneSource multi, fish oil, & a calcium chew later in the day. The calcium chew has some additional D & K (D is necessary for your body to utilize the calcium). I say a multi everyday can't hurt. What you add on top of that is completely up to you.

  • I take a multi-vitamin but also take an omega-3, vitamin D, and calcium supplement.  I have chronically low vitamin D so I have to take an separate supplement in addition to the calcium (which also has vitamin D).  Since having my hyst and losing my ovaries, I've got to work really hard at protecting my bones since I have an increased likelihood of developing osteoporosis early (I start annual bones scans this year).  I also take resveratrol supplement that I have heard good reviews about (for energy, heart, etc) but the jury is still out on whether its helping or not.

  • I don't take any currently because I'm active and am in overall good health.  I used to take a multi, vit c and e, but because I wasn't feeling bad, decided to discontinue use.  Unless you are TTC or know you are deficient/have a specific condition you really don't HAVE to take anything--especially if you have a wholesome, healthy diet.  The people that say you need to take more and more supplements are just buying into what the vitamin companies tell you.  You probably won't harm yourself by taking more supplements, but the science is still out on their actual effectiveness.
  • I take a women's multi sometimes.  Usually when I just feel like I haven't been getting what I need in my food.
  • I take a prenatal because we are TTC but normally I take nothing.  If you eat a healthy diet you are getting the vitamins you need.  If you take too much calcium your body will actually lose calcium.  I strongly believe that people are wasting soooo much money taking *** they don't need!!!
  • Thanks, Ladies! I think I'm going to keep taking my multivitamin for now and ask the doc the next time I'm in on what I should keep doing or start doing.

I think asking your doctor is a good idea. I do not think you are doing any harm with taking a multivitamin. As previous posters mentioned different people will need different things.
