If you haven't heard our state is in a lot of trouble budget wise. They owe every single school district millions. Since the state isn't paying the districts are doing a reduction in force. Basically people are just let go even if they have tenure sometimes not though it depends on how they do this. Davids job could be in jeopardy even though he's the only teacher for 6th grade math. There are very few repeats and the district is running bare boned as it is. The news came today that there were talks about it and if that plan went through David would be safe. But we don't know what their plans are. Hopefully they won't do anything. The worst part is that there are literally no teaching jobs because pretty much every district is cutting or not hiring replacements. It's really bad. So please lots of dust and happy thoughts and prayers if you're the praying kind

Re: Need millions of dust
Here's a stupid question... so how will they learn math? This is so sad. If IL is anything like NJ then the superintendents and administrators are taking home HUGE paychecks and teachers are paid crap and shaking in their boots just to keep their jobs. I honestly don't know how those people look themselves in the mirror. Problem is they are so entitled that they think they need more. Sickening.
I really hope everything turns out okay for David. Such a sad state of affairs.
Personal rant warning - I always get angry at those commercials that talk about job security in education and how fast it's expanding, etc when it seems to be exactly opposite of that. (However, those commercials are usually for universities advertising their certificate programs probably to make money themselves) But Daniel got a degree in Multilingual Education and had the hardest time getting and keeping a job teaching. He was only able to find contract work and then he didn't get renewed. Now, thankfully he had IT to fall back on, but it just really sucks that he was not able to pursue his dream right now. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be for him and he seems really happy with his decision to pursue IT right now, so I'm happy for him. But at the same time I still get upset at the condition our education system is in for multiple reasons. It feels like soon sending your kid to public school will be like a death sentence education-wise. Okay, rant over.
They'll cram 40, 50, 60 kids in ONE class. No joke, teachers may lose prep periods (would be negotiated with unions but it would be a keep your job or lose it). A local district just let go of 112 teachers. 112. The superintendents don't even have to have ANYTHING to do with education, it's an ELECTED position. ELECTED. The district we live in is owed 3.5 million just for this year, districts are assuming they will not be getting paid and have to take measures to do something. Yet, the state will pay for something stupid in their budgets. For example, the city of Chicago got 1mil in federal bailout money, and they're using it on tasers for the entire police force despite the fact that schools are going to close because they have literally no choice. And what gets me, is that a lot of the schools aren't cutting the extracurriculars. Granted David loves coaching but dammmit it's called an EXTRAcurricular for a reason!
The talked about RIF (reduction in force) would not affect David but we don't know if that will be the one they will take or if it will be a different one but either way we really hope it won't come to that
Also, the teachers could get called back next year or over the summer if they do the RIF and get extra money to hire them back. David counted if they let everyone without tenure at his school go there'd be 10 teachers left in 3 grades.
For reals. It's sad, there's so many teachers graduating each year and there are less and less new positions created and less people retiring each year to fill everything and now they're just SOL. It's very scary.
Wow, very scary, Kara!
Hoping David gets spared and the city of Chicagoe figures something out!
it's not just the city or the burbs sadly, its the entire STATE! So every single school district that depends on the state for money is screwed. That's the scary part. Many of these schools will be closing if something doesn't change.
Well that's good because then all those kids with crappy educations because they were in huge classes and didn't get any individual attention will have jobs to fall back on when they (don't) graduate.
My mom was a teacher for 30 years and just in the past 2 years moved to administration (director of enrollment for a private school). They're facing a whole set of problems too and she's afraid her school is going to close after next year.
I understand the need to cut the budget somewhere and I get that education will take a hit but this seems to be going WAY too far. Letting teachers go in an already understaffed school system is not the way to do it.
I agree Marissa! I wonder how much money has been spent by schools to keep up on the NCLB stuff that they didn't have to do several years ago too. It's just crazy.
The latest report is that IF the budget cut goes through a possible 17,000. 17K TEACHERS will be out of a job.
I'm writing my state senators today. And every day. They're going to get a million emails from me.
Wow. That's just crazy. I can't even wrap my head around it.
I hope things turn around.

You always have my dust and prayers girlfriend...hoping the very best for David!!! :::sending you lots of happy thoughts to Chicago-land!::
Kara, you know I totally hear you on this!! Both Michael and I are living in fear of all the budget cuts in NYS right now. Not only could my job be cut- just completely (and this is with 10 years of experience in this district)- my classes could be HUGE next year. HUGE.
Thinking of you and David!!
tons of thoughts and such your way too! I know most states are feeling the hurt too.
