Found Dog - Please Save Me!

DH and I found a lost dog last night roaming our neighborhood in Deerfield (Mason).  It appears to be a female Keeshond or Collie (maybe?).  She has a red collar on but no tags.  Appears to be housetrained as she responds to basic commands and barks then stands at our garage door to be let out.

If you or someone you know is looking for a lost dog, please email me at louiecj (at) gmail (dot) com.  We plan to take her to the Warren Co. Human Society later today.

  • It's a long shot, but does your neighborhood have a community email distribution? That's how I get the word out for roaming dogs in our area.

    I wrote this!
  • Just a suggestion - if it's possible, you guys might be able to take her to a vets office to scan to see if she's microchipped.

There's a vets office on 42 (County Animal Hospital) that's open today until 6 and they'll scan her for you. It's a small liklihood that it will give you the name of the owner, but might be worth a shot!

Good idea but I don't think so.  We asked our neighbor who's lived here longer than us (we're relatively new) if he knew who it might belong to and he said doesn't look like a dog from around here.

I was hoping that the Human Society would be able to scan her there?  Do they not have that capability?  We were going to call first to see what their policy is for dogs brought in.  I'd hate for the owner to not have enough time to find her or something.  She's a good dog.

I'm not sure about the Humane Society's policy to be honest. I used to work at the vet's office I suggested above, and we had people bring in dogs all the time to check for a chip.

A FWIW, you guys are awesome for taking her in!

  • If she has a collar, she definitely belongs to someone. Maybe you could post under the "lost and found" section of Cincinnati Craigslist. Also, definitely have her scanned for a microchip. I'm sure she is missed!!!

  • UPDATE:  DH and his dad took her to the Warren Co. Humane Society.  She was scanned and there was no microchip :(.  They will hold her for 5 days. Hopefully her owner will claim her during this time.  Otherwise, they'll do a temperment test to see whether she is adoptable or if not...well...you know what the other option is :(.  We just couldn't keep her ourselves...DH is allergic to most dogs and that's a lot of fur and grooming :/
  • I think it was really nice of you to take her in for at least a little while and do the best you could. With what's gone on with my dogs this week, please know that I think you're pretty wonderful for making sure the dog was safe, and giving it your best shot as far as finding the owner.

We've picked up a few strays ourselves that we've had to drop off at the Humane Society, and I know how conflicted that can make you feel.

  • I teach in Mason and we have a school bulletin board where people have had a lot of success with lost and found.  Did you find out what kind of dog it is?  Can you tell me about where you found it (near Mason-Mont, etc-you dont need to say your exact subdivision if you aren't comfortable)

Yes, definitely very conflicted.  We did everything we could think of to try to re-unite the dog with its owners before taking her to the shelter but nothing panned out.

We walked in the rain to a few neighbors houses (that had lived here since the subdivision was built) but no one recognized her as a dog from around here.  We called the HOA management company to see if they could send a bulletin to the residents.  We posted to Craiglist, Knot/Nest/Bump, and Facebook.  We had her scanned for a microchip...

Yesterday was a long day and I must say I grew quite attached to that dog in the short time she was with us.  When I open the garage now I half expect to see her there :/.  So sad.

Please send T&P that this dog's family finds her soon or that she finds a new family to love her.  DH and I are such saps for animals...!
