I know we're not supposed to do this (Palin), but...

Did I seriously hear a quote from her on the Today show this morning in which she described regular Americans as "Joe-six-pack Americans?"  Really?!
In case you're wondering where everyone went: http://pandce.proboards.com/index.cgi

Re: I know we're not supposed to do this (Palin), but...

  • LOL...I heard that last night and I shouted "WHAT?" from the kitchen. Because that's MY phrase!....lol
  • Is that where the phrase came from?  Someone on the other board used that phrase and I thought "what a strange thing to say."
  • that's so random

  • That might have been me. :) It's a phrase I use to describe voters who don't really care about issues, don't take time to educate themselves about candidates, those who vote "emotionally." It may sound elitist but I don't mean it to be. Unless elite means caring about politics. For example, not a single person on this board could be described as Joe Six-Pack. Yes

ps...I see we've both been to Pundit Kitchen this morning!!

Kind of a brilliant strategy... pick someone the public perceives as 'one of them'.  They can then use arguably demeaning terminology thereby winning over the media elite and the down-home people who are okay with HER use of it b/c she's one of them (kind of like how only sbp and I can make fun of Indiana).

  • I've heard this phrase used a thousand times to describe Everyman.  Wasn't there a movie called Joe Sixpack?
  • Not only that, but she thinks it's time for Joe Sixpack (like herself) to become VP.

"It's time that normal Joe Six-pack American is finally represented in the position of vice presidency," the Republican vice presidential candidate told radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt.

I mean, I drink like a fish, but I really don't think that's a good qualifier for the vice presidency. I'm probably taking the sixpack part too literally, but it makes me cringe.

I still don't really get what she's trying to say here - so normal Americans are drunks? OR is she referring to abs of steel? Hmm

This is the part of the entire anti-elite sentiment that I don't understand, regardless of who is running for office.  Since when is the free leader of the world, or the second-in-command to the free leader of the world, supposed to be an average person?  Where is the benefit of someone parochial or uneducated or rough around the edges being our representative to the rest of the world?

We want the cream of the crop to be our airline and fighter pilots, our doctors and our scientists.  Shouldn't we want someone who is the cream of the crop to help govern and represent our nation to the rest of the planet?

Joe Sixpack isn't used to refer specifically to drinking, despite the word "sixpack."  It's simply a euphemism for the common person.

lol, could have been.  Yes, I needed Pundit Kitchen to lift, erm, my spirits today.

  • I agree with IIOY.  That kind of education denigrating attitude is really lame.  No wonder America is falling behind in education.

Do people really want their kid to grow up to become someone who fits a "Joe Sixpack" stereotype?  No.  So why on earth is she glorifying it?

Mediocrity is not something to aspire to or reward.

    Indifferent

Her intelligence might be that of Joe six-pack, but what exactly is so average about the rest of her life?

  • You can fight for "joe sixpack" (::shudder::) without actually being "joe sixpack" yourself.
