So we were supposed to have a few people over for dinner tonight. For a variety of reasons, plans changed and now we've got 8-10 people coming over for drinks and appetizers instead.
The dinner plan was salad and homemade pizzas. The people coming were going to bring dessert (and I think they still are).
I am planning on still doing the pizzas, just cutting them in smaller pieces. One is traditional tomato, basil, mozzerrella, and the other is a white pizza with mushrooms, shallots, garlic, thyme, and fontina.
I've got nuts and olives too. I'm going to run to the store to get some vegetables and dip this morning.
I feel like I might need 1-2 more items. I don't want to do crackers and cheese, since the pizzas are essentially bread and cheese.
I don't want anything super labor intensive, but I do have time to make something not too complicated. I'd rather do that than drive all the way over to Trader Joes for prepared stuff.
Ideas?
Re: NER - food help...appetizer ideas?
chips and salsa?
bruschetta?
my read shelf:
hummus?
fruit salsa with homemade?cinnamon?chips??
Or homemade guacamole...
No, wait. I've got it. You should make those little cocktail weinies in BBQ sauce.
I was just about to pose this very question in preparation for the bachelorette party that I'm having at my house next friday.
Here's some yummy dessert-like dip (I made it once and it was great):
1 cup canned pumpkin (15 oz.)
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 1/2 tablespoons orange juice
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons nutmet
Blend everything together until fully mixed and smooth.
Serve with gingersnaps!!
This is a HUGE HIT! Everyone loves it and always asks for the recipe or for me to bring it again.

Oh that's cute! Then you can just pick it up.
Lots of good ideas! I'm writing a few down, and I think I'll go to the store and see what looks good. I still don't "know" everything in our store...I've never bought hummus there so I don't know what brands they carry, etc.
You think bruschetta will go with the pizzas and not be too much "bread with stuff on it"? That is my concern.
But I'm LOLing at this!
True story - last year, a girl from my local had a really fun wine tasting party. Everyone brought food. Nice, wine tasting food..cheese and chocolate covered strawberries and stuff. One girl, who is very sweet, brought a crockpot full of weinies in Catalina dressing. The light kind, you know, to make it healthy.
ESF, you are a better person than me, because you actually tried the weiners. They scared me. And I will eat pigs in a blanket, so I'm not completely anti-weinie.
Re the bruschetta: I love to eat "bread with stuff on it," so maybe I'm biased, but I've gone out for pizza AND ordered bruschetta or garlic bread as an appetizer. And I ate both.
LOL... one of my friends had cocktail weinies at her wedding reception. And not as a joke. The maid of honor decided it was funny and did a cocktail weinie toast instead of a champagne toast. Klassy.
I don't think bruschetta would be too much... but I fairly regularly eat pizza with breadsticks or garlic bread.
She made me try the weiners! I couldn't avoid it!
I'm not going to do the salad skewers, even though I love the suggestion. I've got one thing of fresh mozzeralla, and I need it for my pizza.
I have a recipe for broccoli rabe pesto bruschetta. It looks really easy and it would be a good color contrast on my table of food. I've been dying to make it. So if you all say that more vegetables on bread is not overkill, I'm going for it.
Go for it and can I come?

Oh the weinies! I forgot to add this...
We went to an at-home wedding reception where the bride made her own weinies in a blanket...the couple is now divorced. Just saying...
I just came back from the store. They were out of broccoli rabe so I took that as an omen and scrapped my bruschetta idea.
I'm going to make dates wrapped in bacon instead.
I also grabbed a hunk of brie and some crackers. I've got grapes, so I'll throw that out too.
So I should be good to go. Thanks for the suggestions!
