Airfare buying tips?

We are going to Seattle in 5 1/2 weeks to visit friends and we still haven't bought our plane tickets.  I've been airfare stalking for the past 2 months on American.  We have to fly American b/c we have vouchers that we need to use.  Farecast predicts that the cost will drop.  I've heard that certain days of the week and times, say Monday at 1am, are better for buying tickets as well.  Anyone have any tips?  I hate not having our tickets yet, makes me anxious :)

Re: Airfare buying tips?

  •  I don't know if this is true or not...BUT i have heard that Wednesday nights are the best time to buy because that's when fares are lowest....I don't for the life of me remember WHY, but that's what I've heard from several different sources over the past years.  I have had luck with this as well, so it might be worth checking out (watching the difference in prices on Tuesday or even Wednesday during the day, compared to Wednesday night--say 10pm or so).  I can't remember the exact time when prices change on Wednesday night....I want to say 10 or so.  could be wrong, though.

Sorry for the messed up jumble of a response.  Like I said, I don't know if it's true or not, or really any reason, but I have had luck with it!  So...HTH!

  • I've heard Tuesday or Wednesday are the best. Thursday-Sunday aren't good to buy.

I've also heard that you should delete your cookies before you buy (if buying online) because sometimes that makes the price go down. No idea why.

I believe it is because the airline website can remember your previous searches and if you show more interest in a location they might increase.

For me, I look at different times of the week, get a feel for what is good and then book. I've also heard Tue and Wed, but I've had luck for different trips on other days so I do a little stalking. Definitely book more than 2 weeks out - I really notice a jump past that 2 week mark.

  • My dad used to work for American.  He told me that Wednesday nights are generally the best time to buy tickets.
  • Yep, Wednesday nights. Also, I've found the lowest fars typically about 3 weeks out. Of course, it's a gamble and the flight could sell out or go up. When I flew to see my Gma in the hospital, I booked the flight 2hrs before departure and it was super cheap. I hate the airfare game but, like Becky, I stalk it until I'm comfortable.
  • Thanks ladies!!  I'm going to have to be on alert Wednesday night!!
