Normally, I don't worry about things happening to me while I'm on vacation...I figure that bad things can happen here just as easily. But, when my dad called me at 10.30 last night to ask where in Mexico we were going b/c of the 13 people who were killed in Alcopoco, it makes me stop and think for a second. Cancun isn't that close to Alcopoco, but now that the violence has spread into touristy areas, we've decided to cancel our trip in May. I read over the hotel's rules and it says no "cancellation fee" if you cancel more than 7 days in advance, and I'm going to call the airline now to see how that will work. Like I said, I don't scare easily, but when my dad freaks out over it, I worry a bit...he works overseas and normally supports everywhere we choose to go (he's been in some hairy situations, especially in Africa, but still encourages us to go).
So. If you had about $2000 and 5-6 nights (May 15-20 or 21), where would you go? This does not include flights. Right now we're playing around w/going to Vegas that Tues-Fri, but I know i'll miss my beach time.
Or should we be smart and save it...I especially want this and this.
Re: Another "Where would you go?"
I think you guys should still go on vacation. Even if it's an extended weekend, you are going to want to get out of your parent's house and away from the stress of building a house.
If you have already put the vacation money aside, I think there is nothing wrong with still using it for vacation money. You don't need to spend the entire amount you had earmarked and use some of it to start saving it for the new furniture you want.
You have pleanty of time to decorate your house, take advantage of the vacation.
Those are my arguments...I don't think I'd be giving it a second thought if our friends hadn't said anything negative about our trips (in a nutshell - he told Mike we'd better start saving for Chicago...Mike said we're good there, but we're looking forward to Mexico. Friend says "What? Why are you still going when you have a house to pay for?") We've already paid over half our closing costs, the other half is sitting in an account, along w/enough for the waser and dryer we need AND for the furniture, should we decide to get it (we don't actually NEED furniture)...plus, we won't have a mortgage/utility pmt for a couple of months, so there's more money there. Vaca was paid for over a month ago and was never factored into our savings, house, etc.

I agree...although I would probably still be going to Mexico. I know you don't scare easily and either do I. When we went in Jan we just stayed at the resort and never felt threatened at all.

That week specifically? I'd go to Wisconsin.
VERY safe. Not really bikini weather, but you won't have to worry about violence erupting. LOL
I'd honestly wait a week to think about it and see how the situation progresses. You'll still have AMPLE time to call and cancel, still, but with Spring Break coming up, I'd be curious to see how things sort out. (I mean, I HOPE nothing happens, but what I'm thinking is hello - Spring Break?! SOMEONE'S going to fix it because otherwise, all hell will break lose for loss of revenue!)
My dad suggested CR, and it's another place I really want to go. Actually, we were talking about a 2 week trip next year - Belize, CR and Panama.

Since you already have all this money saved up and/or a plan to have it ready than I would definitly go on vacation, even if it was closer to home.
I was going suggest Costa Rica, we went on our honeymoon and can't wait to go back, it was more than reasonable and so incrediable.
We stayed at the Peace Lodge then went to Punta Islita on the coast. The Peace Lodge was out of this world, I've never seen anything like it from the rooms to the grounds and the food.
