NER: I miss college

This is little sister's first semester in college and she makes me miss it. Life was so much easier then; although at the time it was so dramatic.

In the last couple of weeks, she's gone to a concert, Ashton Kousher (sp?) came to campus for an Obama ralley, has gone to seven parties and she liked a boy who just wants to be her friend. Today she is rushing to finish a paper that is due at 3 pm.

Meanwhile, I am watching the news to see how screwed up the economy is, paying the electric bill and wondering why my check engine light is on. Good times, good times.

Re: NER: I miss college

  • I LOVED college! I always say that college is the time in life where I had none of the responsibility and all of the freedom!

  • I live pretty close to where I went to college, and I feel that way almost every single time I drive by it.
  • Aww, avenue q...

    KATE MONSTER:
I wish I could go back to college.
Life was so simple back then.

    NICKY:
What would I give to go back and live in a dorm with a meal plan again!

    PRINCETON:
I wish I could go back to college.
In college you know who you are.
You sit in the quad, and think, "Oh my God!
I am totally gonna go far!"

    ALL:
How do I go back to college?
    I don't know who I am anymore!

    PRINCETON:
I wanna go back to my room and find a message in dry-erase pen on the door!
    Ohhh...
I wish I could just drop a class...

    NICKY:
    Or get into a play...

    KATE MONSTER:
    Or change my major...

    PRINCETON:
    Or my T.A.

    ALL:
I need an academic advisor to point the way!
    We could be...
    Sitting in the computer lab,
4 A.M. before the final paper is due,
Cursing the world 'cause I didn't start sooner,
And seeing the rest of the class there, too!

    PRINCETON:
I wish I could go back to college!

    ALL:
How do I go back to college?!
    AHHHH...

    PRINCETON:
I wish I had taken more pictures.

    NICKY:
But if I were to go back to college,
Think what a loser I'd be-
    I'd walk through the quad,
    And think "Oh my God..."

    ALL:
"These kids are so much younger than me."
  • Oh, I so know the feeling. H and I discuss this often. And since we met my senior year of college we're even like, "See! We'd even still be together and everything!"

All the freedom, none of the responsibility. Absolutely, absolutely true.

I look at my cousins who are now in college and DYING to get out and I just keep saying, "no! no! STAY THERE!!! HAVE FUN! You've got the rest of your life to worry about jobs, mortgages and the like."

What I wouldn't give for my biggest worry to be that I *might* be late with a paper. Sigh.

  • I miss it too. :(  A couple of weeks ago, mr. gtown and I took a weekend trip to Charlottesville, VA, which is where the Univ. of Virginia is. We were hanging out in the neighborhood near campus, and it made me SO nostalgic. I actually told him that I want to go back to college. Sigh.

  • MD, I think I love you.
  • Sigh....me too...it really was some of the best times. So much fun. I can't believe I ever looked forward to graduating and getting into "the real world." Turns out "the real world" is overrated.

I tell my teenage stepson he has to go to college not only because it's important for his future, but because I promise it will be the most fun he's ever had in his life.

  • Sorry to be debbie downer, but it isn't all that great for everyone.

I had plenty of bills to worry about, hellish roommates, missed my family. Overall I'm not sure how I would have gotten through if I hadn't met Mr.P freshman year. I much prefer having only a job to school + job.

Lots of college students, esp freshman, are prime candidates for depression. It kinda sucked when I was there to have everyone telling me how great it should be.

It's so easy to have a rosy view of the past; it's good to remember that it's not wonderful for everyone.  I actually had a much better high school experience than college (and I went to the #1 dream college in the country.  gag.)  That said, I did have a pretty kickass senior year even though it started with mega drama (my newly ex-boyfriend sleeping with 2 different sorority sisters and a couple end of friendships...yep, that was my fun year in college, lol...)

  • I think I'm with Pescalita. I worked really hard in college and instead of getting paid for working, I paid to work! And when I had paid work, it didn't pay very well. I lived on very little money, little sleep and my social life was almost non-existent. I did well and go a lot out of school, but no way in hell would I want to go back to that time.
  • I actually didn't love my undergrad experience that much, but I had the time of my life in law school. I had a ton of free time, I met some of my best friends, I met my husband, and I was learning about a subject that actually interested me. I was so sad to graduate and enter the "real world." A lot of my friends couldn't wait to graduate, but I knew I was having the time of my life. I wish I could be a professional student.

  • There are plenty of things I didn't like about college... the weird roommate, the creepy guy that would not leave me alone junior year... the bad RA Sophomore year.... but I really do miss college sometimes. My biggest responsibility was having to write papers by a certain time or remember to practice for my voice lesson. I didn't have a job, I didn't have bills to pay... Don't get me wrong, I like having a steady income and nights/weekends off, but there are days/weeks/months where I'd really honestly love going back to college
  • I didn't like college all that much, either, Pescalita. I liked my classes, but the "college experience" just wasn't my thing. I felt like I was living in a bubble the entire time. The town was beautiful but basically only existed to service the university, and it was too small for me. I missed seeing non-college age people, hated sharing rooms with people and felt trapped.

I definitely like being an adult (albeit an immature one) much better.

  • I will say this - I really miss having 3-day weekends every week (no class on Fridays at NYU, with some exceptions - labs, studio, languages, recitations...but I never took those Wink)
  • I can beat that Marquis - one semester (I think first semester of my senior year) I only had class on Tuesday & Thursday.

Yeah, I'd often schedule my classes that way and then do internship and/or work on the other two days and STILL have 3-day weekends.

  • Yeah, I just slept and/or loafed around my apartment.

Yeah, I just slept and/or loafed around my apartment.

I think it'd be fun to do college that way.  I always had either a job or an internship.

I remember my roommate my sophomore year had class Monday-Thursday 9:30-12:15  (that's 4 4-credit classes).  She was rich and didn't have to work, so aside from those 10 hours/week, she got to do whatever.  I was supa-jealousE.

Though, 4-day weekends every week would be very nice as well.

  • I went to a school where there were a lot of nontraditional students (i.e. grown ups), so we had tons of afternoon/evening classes, and tons of Tuesday/Thursdays.  I had three semesters where I did just that.  Once I took 12 credits and it was awesome, but once I took 18 credits, and it was horrible. I went to class from 9-10:15, and then again from 12-7:10.  It was really rough.

I loved college for one and only one reason - I met my husband my freshman year.  Otherwise, I wouldn't go back ever.  And I would have definitely gone somewhere else.  My libertarian school was a terrible fit for me, and I was really busy and stressed.  It really started to get good junior year because I moved into an on campus apartment with three random girls who all happened to be awesome!  I'm still really great friends with one of them.  But otherwise, I wouldn't go back.  I really love being an immature adult like Brookles. Hah!

  • bunny, your school sounds like the libertarian brother of my super liberal, super gay school.

Coming Out Week was like an event... every single night there was some huge event, a drag show, and they had parties for it... they even put up a fake closet with an open door on the main mall.

Me, too! It was senior year, and my husband set his schedule up the same way! SO much fun that semester!?

  • I miss college too although I didn't like living in the dorms and it could be lonely at times. I miss the interesting classes and the people. I also miss the energy that a campus has. There was always something going on.

  • A piece of me misses some of the silly stuff I had time for and another piece of me wishes I took some time to really enjoy it.  Like MD, I was always working if I wasn't in class.  I think it's part of the reason why I feel so burnt out these days.  Eek!

  • I must have been a nerd, I always had classes first thing in the morning all week. I couldn't take afternoon classes, I would fall asleep!

  • I wrote/was an editor for the school newspaper and while that was not really a big deal, we thought we were hot shit_, and it was all fraught with drama and urgency.  There were a couple of times I slept in the office or just stayed in the office doing stuff for class the next day and wore the same clothes two days in a row.

Then my senior year I took a full course load, worked as a server, and did a newspaper internship.  And still went out and partied.  And had a boyfriend with major issues that added to my stress.  I have no idea where that energy came from.

  • Undergrad was definitely not the best of times. I had to work to pay bills. I went to a school that was so liberal that I was considered part of the conservative crowd as a dem. Plus I had several douchy boyfriends to deal with. Oh, and my sophomore year I had a stalker (someone I thought was a friend but then his friendship turned into an unhealthy, borderline obsessive attachment). I loved my classes and my professors though. I spent one semester in DC and that was the best!!!! That more than made up for a crappy 3.5 years.
  • Count me as one of the few who's glad to be done with college.  Not a good time in my life.
