So you may recall that I had a thyroid biopsy done a few weeks ago. Got the results today at me ENT appointment, and everything was benign so that is good news.
On the other hand, the Dr did say they have to do surgery to remove the polyp on my vocal cords. It was really neat to see how my vocal cords look now, compared to when I had my first scope in November. In November they were ragged and puffy and red. Now they are a lot smoother and whiter and less swollen. The polyp itself has shrunk a lot too. The combination of the acid reflux medication and the vocal exercises has helped a lot.
Anyway, my surgery has been scheduled for the 25th of this month. I am going to miss 7 days of work (the Thurs/Fri and the whole next week). I am to be on strict voice rest for 4 days- not allowed to utter a single syllable! After that I am to do a couple minutes a few times a day of my voice exercises and start talking just a little bit. My voice will be very soft. The vocal exercises will help to heal the vocal cords too so that is a good thing! During the first week after the 4 days of silence I should rest 45 minutes for every 15 minutes of talking. the next week will be 30mins talking 30 mins rest, and the week after I can talk up to 45 minutes with a 15 minute rest.... it doesn't have to be timed exactly, but basically I have to work my way up to a normal amount of talking. And its going to be a while before I will have a full range of volume or pitch...
Because I have always had laryngitis type issues (since I was a kid) and because I am in a job where I talk a LOT (almost constantly!) and also because my job does involve speaking loudly (when in the gym or when talking across a loud classroom), and because I am generally a chatty person, I am at a very high risk for the polyp to return if I do not follow the drs advice! the vocal exercises will help me to talk with less strain on the vocal cords. I already notice a huge difference when I do them, so if I stick to the routine I will hopefully not have any voice issues in the future!
sorry that was kind of long and rambly. thanks for reading it!
Re: health update
Oh my! Well, that's great that the results came back benign!
Good luck on your surgery & not talking!
Well when I first found out about the polyp I was put on voice rest for the whole weekend and that was ok, but now, i have recorded a few phrases into my cell phone (please, thank you, eff off! LOL, I love you etc) so if I really do need to SAY something I can.
plus, I can also type pretty fast so I can just open a word document and type to hubby. or text him, or use some simple signs/charades.. it should be ok.
ROFL!!! That's great!
