Jesus H, Ifill!

WTF?  I just found this quote from her at the RNC:

IFILL:  There is also a big difference between running a state -- or running -- as long as she has run a state -- and running for one of the biggest jobs in the country.  What advice do you give her, how to balance it?

WILSON:  Let me say something on that.

IFILL:  She's got five kids! She's got challenges.

WILSON:  That bothers me.

IFILL:  Tell me why.

WILSON:  No one ever asked John Kennedy whether he could be president and be a dad.  Nobody asked Senator Obama whether he could be president and be a dad.  But because Governor Palin is a woman, they're asking whether she can be vice president and a mom.

IFILL:  But she described herself in herself in her --

WILSON:  It's time to end the double standard.

IFILL:  I understand what you're saying. She described herself as a "hockey mom."  That was her self-description.

Admittedly my source is Rush Limbaugh so the transcript could have been doctored, but if it's all true, WTF?!??!?   STEP. DOWN.  And she loses major feminism points too.

Re: Jesus H, Ifill!

  • Wow. She needs to step down for sure. I can't believe whoever "vetted" her on the MPC side didn't raise all of these issues at the time she was chosen...

  • Yowza.  That's not good.  But MrsVtjaime's point is a good one - why did the McCain camp approve of her?  I am beginning to think this is strategy - a built in "but she's biased" defense if Palin tanks.

    bleh - this is sucky.

  • Oh that is some poop.  I honestly just lost some respect for her.

Like Ifill doesn't know anyone who has an effing nanny....jeezuz.

  • Okay, I will lose points here but, I think if you are going to make the fact that you are a super parent a central part of your campaign, you open yourself up to certain criticisms of your parenting abilities. And I think this is true for either a male or a female. Regardless, I think Ifil should step down b/c she displays a bias that a debate moderator shouldn't display.
  • Let me play devil's advocate for a moment, since until I read this post, I liked Ifill a lot.  Palin had been named as the VP candidate only days earlier.  The hot issue at that moment in time was her children, particularly her youngest with Down's and her oldest, who we all had just learned was pregnant.  This is what people were talking about, hence, this is what Ifill was asking about.

With that said, this line of questioning pisses me off.  For all the things I dislike about Palin, I truly believe it is her decision and hers alone to determine whether she can balance her personal and professional lives effectively.  Until men start getting asked such questions, I don't want to hear this garbage.

Agreed. I've heard McCain say several times that palin "really understands what it's like to raise a family" and things along those lines, implying that she has some special middle-America mom status.

Exactly. I'm sure McCain, Obama, and Biden all know "what it's like to raise a family" too, but they haven't turned this skill into a campaign platform.

Given all the partisan on record statements of Ifill, her impartiality will always be questioned and she needs to go.

But no one has EVER asked if you can be a great Dad and hold a high office.  And I reject that people who hire caregivers for their children are bad parents.

  • I see your points on making motherhood her platform means opening up motherhood for criticism.   I'm not sure that she's made it a centerpiece though, just a big part of her biography.

But no dad running for (high) office has turned his fathering abilities into an aspect of his campaign.  I couldn't even tell you how many kids McCain has or their names; but I know Palin has 5 and their names are Trig, Track, Bristol, Willow, and Piper (I think...close enough, anyway). Palin on the other hand seems to think that being a "hockey mom" gives her some sort of points for the presidency. That's cool. I don't mind. But then she can't really call foul when her mothering skills are questioned. I would feel the same way if a man used the same tactic.

I don't really know what caregivers have to do with anything. Who said parents with nannies are bad parents?

BTW, what is "Jesus H"? I keep looking at the subject and I don't get it!

  • Jesus H is like saying wtf?

I know Biden has a son named Beau that is in the military and he took a train ride home every day to be with his sons.  But, what is the point?  Who cares that she has mentioned her kids?  Why does that mean they are a huge part of the campaign?

I am with BlackMamba---I heard this while flipping today on Rush-the actual audio.  It was RIDICULOUS!  This woman needs to go!   Yeah, she will be very unbiased.  Ick!

But Biden doesn't present himself as Joe Six pack father the way Palin/McCain present Palin as your average American hockey mom. FWIW, I raise my eyebrow at Biden for running off to DC right after his childrens' mother died.

I disagree.  How many times have we heard he takes the train home to Delaware every night?  Hooray for him - he has a 2-hour one-way commute.  Mine (at the bank) was 100 minutes one-way.  Want a cookie?

Well, even if you can make the successful argument that Palin is to motherhood as Biden is to fatherhood (which I don't think you can), I think I have previously stated that Biden should be given the side eye for taking the senate position right after his wife died and his sons were in recovering from an accident.

I haven't heard anything she's said to persuade people that she's a parenting expert or a "super parent".  Quite the opposite.

  • I'm confused. ?What's the problem? ?Who's wilson? ?Some PR hack? ?Why shouldn't she question him?

Can I see some better examples? ?This looks tenuous at best. ?Palin acts like she's effing Super Mom. ?She's the hockey lipstick pit bull. ??

I truly think the hockey mom thing is just funny.  I don't think she was using it to tout experience..:).  Her joke had laughing so hard because my mom is actually a hockey mom.  Well, she was when my brother played ice hockey.  My mom had a sweatshirt that she wore to most of my brother's hockey games that said how crazy hockey moms are.  I swear I've hard the pitbull joke too.  Hockey moms are truly a different breed of mom.  :)  Both my brother and I called my mom that night to tease her.

I think you just addressed my issue...she is making a statement about who she is based on what kind of mother she is and once she does this she opens the door, IMO.

Wilson is Representative Heather Wilson, a republican congresswoman from New Mexico.
