AW: Going to NYC! (& air fare score!)
I'm going to NYC in May (yay!) to visit a friend on my way to Boston for my sister's graduation.
I'll have 2 full days in NYC (my friend is working during the day, so I'll only be seeing him in the evenings). Post your what-to-do-in-NYC-for-2-days suggestions.
**I totally scored on DH's about-to-expire AA Miles: First class all the way and back for $30. Squee!**
Re: AW: Going to NYC! (& air fare score!)
I didn't have a lot of time in NYC, but my memories are getting a hot dog from Grey's Papaya and taking the Stanton Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty.
I was told the Stanton Island Ferry was the best way to see it, and cheaper. They have a tour that takes you right up to the Statue, but I loved the view from the SIF.
Definitely go see a show and visit at least one of the major museums (MoMA, Guggenheim, Met). McSorley's is a really fun bar. Empire State building is worth going up as long as the line isn't too long (we waited 2+ hours, but that was over NYE). Last time we went we also took a champagne harbor cruise, which was absolutely fantastic (we booked through goldstar, they have tons of options and you can bring your own food/alcohol on board http://www.goldstar.com/venues/new-york-city-ny/classic-harbor-lines-pier-62.html.) Never made it to Ellis Island, but I've heard that the museum is great.
This is my favorite way to see the Statue too. But we took along a Carnegie Deli sandwich and did it at night.
I'd spend a day wandering around the Soho/West Village/Meapacking area. Downtown, stay (mostly) west of Broadway from Canal St to about 25th-ish. Soho has all of the major shopping you'd expect, plus Washington Square Park, West Village has smaller boutiques and vintage, & Meatpacking has Balenciaga. If you're a classic rock fan, Gramery Park Hotel USED to be my absolute favorite place in NYC, it was where all of the musicians used to stay in the early 70s. Led Zeppelin, Bowie, etc. Very bohemian with an open air rooftop bar. Then stupid Ian Schrager got ahold of it and redid it and now it's all fancy and the roof bar is private but bitterness aside, it's still kind of a cool place to have a drink. Fave restuarant is a place called Uncle Nicks, it's Greek and it's at 9th and 51st.
One of my favorite things to do is walk around SoHo for the day. Everytime I'm in for a weekend I go there for a bit
I don't know how much touristy stuff you plan on doing but I love to catch a show there. You can even get cheap day of tickets. It should be nice in May so I recommend walking in Central Park, a trip to Ellis Island if you've never been, the Met or Natural History Museum.
