Is your family any good at giving you extended family updates? My family is ok . . . sometimes I don't find out someone is pregnant for 5 months, but I will definitely hear when the baby is born or if something serious has happened. J's family is less good which annoys me sometimes.
For example, I bought cute baby stationery for J's cousin (not the cervix one) to send when she had the baby. I got an invite to her shower and couldn't go, but I wasn't sure how pregnant she was. We get a Christmas card in December with them holding a two month old. WTH, people, now we look like jerks for not acknowledging the new baby.
Re: Family updates . . .
OMG, this used to happen to me all the time when I was away at college. My mom would be like "So and so had her surgery" and I'm like "What!?!?! What happened!?" It was so annoying.
In your case, you don't look like jerks, just send the stationary and your congrats!
We (my sister and I) and even DH's siblings... have realized the following:
Mom will (or his mom) tell one of us something. ONLY ONE of us. Usually, she thinks she's told us both, but we converse, email, etc... and find out the whole story from the other.
"Oh, so & so has xyz... really? Oh, I didn't tell you? I must've told your sister."
We've gotten used to it and expect it. Kinda funny cause she doesn't realize she's doing it.

Word travels 'round here.
MIL is a nosy-Nelly so we get updates about things we don't even need to know. My side is a little better, but nothing stays a secret when it comes to my Aunts. The "close" family is only about a dozen people on my side, so it is pretty easy to keep track.
