BR: What do you do with a Bumbo?

image

My mom got Libby a Bumbo and we tried it out yesterday...it works!  She's been holding her head up on her own for a couple of weeks now so I feel okay with her sitting in the Bumbo 5-10 minutes at a time. (The user guide says babies as young as 3 months old, but she's already holding her head upright now, so I am assuming it's okay for her to use it now).

Now here's the question...what do we do while she's sitting in it?  Yesterday, I sang her songs and played peek-a-boo and patty-cake.  But I usually do those things will her on my lap (usually, I rest her on my knees with my feet up on the ottoman).  For $35 for the thing I just want to make sure we'll actually use it.  Her thighs are on the chunky side so I doubt she'll be in it much past this summer.

ETA:  This FAQ says babies as young as 8 weeks old can use it.

Re: BR: What do you do with a Bumbo?

  • We usually talked to him in the beginning, and just look around while holding his head up on his own.  He liked to grab at the burp cloths, so we made sure he always had one when he was sitting in there.  Now I will put him in there sometimes after I feed him so I can wash bottles or go to the bathroom (I take him and the bumbo with me) ... so he can still be upright due to his reflux issues.

At some point we found the tray (the bumbo is on loan from a friend of my mom's), and when we put that on, the first thing he did was figure out how to take it off.  Sometimes he will sit and chew on Sophie (the giraffe chew toy) while looking around.  I think it's really helped with his head control.

  • If you get the tray you can put toys on it for her to play with and once Ashton was ready for solids we use the bumbo with tray instead of the highchair.

He was totally out grown it though....I think he did a long time ago since we used to have to pry him out of the chair because his legs always go stuck..lol!

Bella's legs get stuck too, I should retire it to the basement!

I would do all the things you do in there Lori. We didn't use it for long, maybe a couple of months. I really liked it though and Bella really liked sitting up, she got tired of the swing and the bouncer was too flat for her. She LOVES sitting up!

We bought ours used for $15, I would've never paid full price for it though. I don't feel like it's worth $35 when you can hunt CL and there are tons of them on there. You could try CL for the tray too.

  • Elyse sits in it while I'm eating breakfast or cleaning the kitchen.  I just started using it last week because her neck control wasn't good enough before.

that image is too cute! LOL

  • This is actually a really good question ... we got one "just because" ... and we rarely used it. By the time we got it, Brooke's legs got stuck just like Ashton's and she sat up (tripod) soon after.

We still have it and will probably hang onto it, but I guess you could use it as a high chair substitute or I like the idea of getting the tray to put toys on and whatnot :)

  • I have mixed feelings on the Bumbo. I think we got it on the late side... Alexa was already almost 4 months when we got it, so she sat in it for a few weeks, then was sitting on her own.

So... Maybe it helped her learn to sit on her own? She's not a stable sitter, so it helps keep her in a sit. She is a tummy baby tho, so she prefers to crawl around and gets restless in the chair.

That said... Here is what we have used it for:

-- I put Alexa in it and face the TV and take cute pictures of her "watching" things on the tube, like the Olympics, and then I blog about it.

-- The high chair is still a little big for her, so we have been using the chair and tray to feed her in.

I wish I had got it used. I saw it at a consignment shop but by the time I went back the following day to get it, it was already gone. I used a 20% off coupon tho and we gave it to Alexa as her Christmas gift.

  • Hi ladies,

Thanks!  We took it back...I received Summer Infant 3 Stage Infant Seat at my shower. Yesterday, I opened it up and put Libby in it.  It's very similar to the Bumbo...it can be an infant seat, activity center (added tray) and booster seat for eating.  And the thigh area is more ample since I am fairly certain Libby's chunky thighs will continue to prosper!

So, instead we got a Bright Starts Giggle Parade Bouncer (basically a vibrating bouncer with toys)...I wanted the Rainforest Jumperoo but I think Libby's still to short/small for it.  So I plan to keep my eyes peeled for the Jumperoo used (and for a great price).  Oh and we got a second Seahorse (pink) since it's Libby's favorite and I wanted a back-up one.  Next on the list is getting a Sophie teething toy.

Toys, toys and more toys.  I fear our home will be taken over soon.

dumb question - what is the vibration for?  Does it really calm the baby? (that is what the literature to my maclerran rocker says).  I didn't put batteries in it until a few days ago and it doesn't really seem to do anything for Jack.  I haven't really put him in there fussy - the few times I have tried he wasn't impressed (vibrating or not).  Not really a big deal - the seat is still awesome to put him in for naps so I can carry it into the bathroom, etc.  We also took it when we went to a friend's dinner party (since we don't have an infant seat that we can carry in).

I am guessing the vibrations are enjoyed by babies who also like to fall asleep in the car, etc.  I know "Happiest Baby on the Block" avocates "jiggling" and that does calm Libby.  The chair sort of buzzes when it's turned on and I can feel the vibrations through the hardwood...so I just tried it on and off and she seems not to have a preference either way...yet.
