Please rec. your laptop

We're looking for a new (affordable) laptop, we mainly use it for the internet and storing pictures - any suggestions of what to look for would be great!

TIA!

Re: Please rec. your laptop

  • We have a really thin, light Dell.  We really like it.  Unfortunately I don't know the exact model.  I don't think it was that expensive...maybe $500.

  • I love my macbook.  It is a little pricier than a pc but macs last forever, never get viruses and have an amazing operating system.

  • I'm awaiting the iPad release April 3. on-screen keyboard or wireless one to use with it as well. Will have iBook so you can travel with it like a kindle, photo storage, etc. I think it's a great bargain at $500 for an apple product and I am so excited to get one.
  • We just researched a lot, and ended up with a Dell.I also use a Dell at work and like that one as well. We ordered it online from the Dell site so that we could get the features we wanted (and not pay for ones we didn't)- it was so easy to customize our laptop.

A week later it was at our door.  We love it.

  • I just got an HP off of woot.com about a month ago and I love it!  It's the HP dv7.  It's over 17", so not as portable as a netbook, but the picture is great and it has a split keyboard with number pad, which was very important to me.  :-)

  • DH used to have Dells all the time and then he had some really awful experiences with the company, and I know a lot of other people who did too (like Dar).  I have an ASUS, it is skinny and light, and I really like it.  I forget what DH got but he is a "I'll never buy a Dell again" person, and he works in computers.

    me, too.

For Windows, my computer-geek H would recommend Acer for quality for the price.

  • Thanks girls!

We have an HP right now, and we have had so many problems with it - the wireless doesn't work (I guess a common problem w/ the motherboard), the hinge on the monitor is broken, and the battery is beyond dead.  I think it has like, a 20 minute window on it.

DON'T BUY A DELL!  I've had nothing but problems.  I spent over 2K on my laptop and get everything top of the line, blu ray and everything and it sucks.  I've had to take everything off and reinstall is because the OS was corrupt and it still doesn't work right.  I had to upgrade my OS because of it to windows 7 and they made me pay for it.  Plus I had to pay for customer service on the OS because it's not covered under their warranty.  I was on the phone for DAYS, literally, with them trying to fix an 8 month old laptop.  Now I have windows 7 and I've spent over a month trying to get dell to install it on the computer.  I've called numerous times and left messages because they are always in a meeting.  I still have the corrupt OS on my computer and I've had it with dell.  If I could afford another computer I would get one but this one is only a year old.

  • Another vote for Mac. I used PC's my whole life and was converted by DH. The graphics, operating system, reliability are all better than any pc i've had. They are pricey, but so worth it. The power book we have now is almost 6 years old, runs perfectly, never an issue, tons of memory, can't get viruses, yada yada. I think you could go cheaper for a pc but it won't last nearly as long or be half as nice IMHO.
