i am not good at work schmoozing

i just got invited to join a big group of managers for a work dinner tonight. i'm flattered because the main higher up dude asked me just now. and i feel like it'd be stupid to turn it down. but i'm so uncomfortable in these situations. guess i'll just try my best to not let my nerves show and find at least one familiar face to sit by.

any words of wisdom from professional schmoozers out there?

and i'm kicking myself for wearing a bright green sweater on St. Patty's day. i feel a little silly now.

Re: i am not good at work schmoozing

  • Just try to relax as much as possible.  I find that the bigwigs normally are looking to relax and just have a nice dinner.  Sometimes it seems that they get annoyed when you try to hard to impress them.  As hard as it is, I would try to forget their level and just look forward to a nice night out with coworkers.
  • Whenever I've been in that situation, I just smile and nod... and I usually only speak when I have something super important or valuable to say (which, in my case, is almost never Stick out tongue).

I agree w/ pp... don't try overly hard to impress anyone. Just try and relax, have a good time.

  • Me neither. It's fine if they want to shoot theshit but I feel like topics always drift towards parts of work that I'm either not involved or familiar with and I don't have much to add.
  • I have to do this quite a bit.  Definitely try to relax as much as possible, but feel free to interject into conversation if you have something to say.  Otherwise, talking about generic/public knowledge stuff helps (weather, current events, things happening at your company).  Enjoy a glass of wine (that can help loosen you up!), but don't drink too much =)  Take it as a very positive thing that you are invited - it can only lead to bigger & better things!
  • guess what? it went great. and i'm really glad i went. kinda felt special b/c i was the only non-manager there out of a group of about 20.
  • Yay!  I'm glad you had a good time.  And it is always great to be included in those type events.  Maybe they are considering moving you up into managemnt?!?!?

That's what I was thinking too.

I'm glad you had a good time, Katie! :)

  • Katie, I'm glad everything went well!  That is great you were the only non-manager there.  That sounds very promising for you!

  • That's great news!  I agree with the others that your invitation sounds like it could mean very good things for your professional status in your company.   I'm glad it went great!! All that worrying for nothing...Stick out tongue
