Re: ?Mamas & Mamas to Be: Weekly Check-in?
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
6 weeks and 4 days old
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
Libby is consistently smiling now and any moment she'll be giggling! She can hold up her head on her own and has found her hands (sucking on them nowadays). She loves her Fisher Price Seahorse that we've nicknamed Sally.
I had my 6 weeks appt. and am all good. I am also down 38 lbs. since Libby's bday. Today was my first full day at work...I pumped three times and J brought Libby to the office for lunch and I nursed her.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
Libby's two month check-up at the end of this month.
(4) Where do you plan to give birth (hospital, birthing center, etc.)? Any particular reasons behind this decision?
I gave birth at our local hospital...it was covered by my insurance and has a Level III NICU (only one in our area).
(5) Have you been super sensitive to the way things smell or taste now that you're pregnant?
I had super sonic nostrils when PG (I could smell EVERYTHING) and it's still around...I guess it's to keep you from eating things that are poisonous or rotten.
(6) When did you pick a pediatrician and how did you find them?
We were going to go with our family doctor but liked the staff pediatrician that saw Libby at the hospital so we went with her instead. I am pleased with our decision.
(7) Are there any questions that you'd like to see here in the future?
TTCers: Which cycle are you on? Where in the cycle are you? What, if anything, are you doing to have success TTCing?
Mamas: Attachment parenting: 100% for you, 100% not for you, or something in-between?
We're using a lot of the AP principals but don't see them as "rules"...we're pretty much doing the 7 B's:
http://www.askdrsears.com/html/10/T130300.asp
We're also CDing which many AP parents also do...and I plan to use Babyled Weaning when it comes time to introducing solids around 6 months.

(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 32w, 5d
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Crappy, to be honest. I cannot believe I have PUPPP, and frankly I'm pretty bitter about it. I've tried really, really hard to keep a positive attitude about all of the stuff that's happened so far, but did I REALLY need something else to go wrong with this pregnancy? I'm feeling sooooo over it right now...
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Tuesday...nothing exciting, just a checkup. And I'll be asking my doc about getting some steroid cream for this rash. Phenergan ain't cutting it...
(4) Where do you plan to give birth (hospital, birthing center, etc.)? Any particular reasons behind this decision? Hospital, for two reasons: first, there aren't any birthing centers in my area. Second, between the twins and the GD I have a high risk pregnancy, so I would rather be in the hospital in case anything went wrong (and I don't think I'd be admitted to a birthing center in any case).
(5) Have you been super sensitive to the way things smell or taste now that you're pregnant? I've never had a very good sense of smell, but in the last couple of months it's gotten dramatically better - so odd! I seem to be a lot more sensitive to sour smells - you know like the smell a washcloth gets when it's been wadded up in a ball vs hung out properly? That kind of smell.
(6) When did you pick a pediatrician and how did you find them? We haven't. Pediatricians work a little differently in Australia - you just take your child to your regular GP, and they'll give you a referral to a ped if the problem isn't something they can treat. There's also a ped clinic at the local hospital, but I'm not sure how that works with referrals etc.
Lisa, can you please change me over to expecting a boy? Thanks!
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
20 weeks, 5 days
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
I'm starting to feel......heavy. I kind of wish that my bump looked as big as it feels. I feel so big and heavy already, but my bump is only little.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
Ultrasound next Wednesday.
(4) Where do you plan to give birth (hospital, birthing center, etc.)? Any particular reasons behind this decision?
Our local hospital has a great birthing center in it. I want to be in a hospital surrounded by doctors for both me a my LO, just in case. Oh, and anesthesia! I totally respect other people's decision for a home birth, but that's completely not for me.
(5) Have you been super sensitive to the way things smell or taste now that you're pregnant?
I reeeeeally was smell-sensitive for the first trimester, but my smellers seem to have evened out for now.
(6) When did you pick a pediatrician and how did you find them?
Haven't thought about this much yet. We probably need to look into this soon. We got a folder of information at our last doctor visit, including a list of pediatricians in the medical group (Peds is in the same building as my OB). I need to start looking through this.
(7) Are there any questions that you'd like to see here in the future?
Can't think of anything at the moment.....
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? Jack is 3 weeks old
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?feeling good - PP bleeding seems to have stopped
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? I go in 3 weeks, Jack goes at 2 months.
(4) Where do you plan to give birth (hospital, birthing center, etc.)? Any particular reasons behind this decision? wanted to birth at home but got dumped by the HB MW and couldn't find another one that was available - no close (free standing) birth center so I ended up being at the hospital. It worked out ok - I could have did without the drama about the placenta being too slow and I was really annoyed that the random ped on call right before we left made us stay an extra day - Jack's ped said it was unnecessary. I should have listened to my gut instinct, she (and MW) discharged us after one night but then right before we got ready to leave he "failed" his external billiruben scan. That probably had more to do with his coloring/ethnicity b/c once they made us stay and did the blood work he was a-ok. So overall it was a nice birth (thanks to my CNMW) but we still had some unnecessary interventions and one mean nurse.
(5) Have you been super sensitive to the way things smell or taste now that you're pregnant? I was surprised that I didn't when pregnant but my sense of smell is already way too good - but the fact that gross smells didn't make me (extra) sick was surprising.
(6) When did you pick a pediatrician and how did you find them? he goes to the same practice I went to. My ped just retired so he doesn't go to my same dr. but I just called to see who was accepting new patients and there were 2 I remember liking but one is probably near retirement in less than 10 years so I went with the other one. I'm kind of glad she's female because I have had to nurse him at both appointments and I just feel more comfortable doing that in front of another woman, but I'm sure it wouldn't be that big of a deal to do it in front of a male dr. once I got use to the idea. Other than that I wasn't too concerned about interviewing her prior to the birth because I already knew (through other people) that she and the practice are pretty laid back regarding spacing out vaccines and some other stuff that was important to me.
(7) Are there any questions that you'd like to see here in the future?
Mamas: Attachment parenting: 100% for you, 100% not for you, or something in-between? we practice many of the principles, but Jack will be going to daycare at 12 weeks (I recently read something that said you really should be with the child and practing all the attachment stuff for the first year!!) and also we have some non-attachment parenting items (a bouncer and swing). So I guess we are not as hardcore as some parents I have met, but we both read the Dr. Sears book and do base a lot of what we do on that. Jack loves skin to skin time nestled under his daddy's neck and John did that on his own from the book so I'm glad we are both on board.
Bonus picture - birth announcement in my siggy.
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 37w,4d
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Good. Excited. Went for our hospital tour and feeling really comfortable with the whole thing. I feel like we've got a lot of support on all fronts.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Tuesday...another check up. Hoping for some progress, since there hasn't been any yet.
(4) Where do you plan to give birth (hospital, birthing center, etc.)? Any particular reasons behind this decision? Hospital. I wouldn't consider delivering anywhere else, just in case my baby or I need extra care. I hope to labor at home for as long as possible, but I feel better knowing that I'll have medical professionals around to assist with delivery. I feel very happy with my hospital choice, however, since they seem very accommodating, supportive of natural childbirth, welcoming of our doula, and they have tubs to labor in.
(5) Have you been super sensitive to the way things smell or taste now that you're pregnant? Nope.
(6) When did you pick a pediatrician and how did you find them? We chose ours a few weeks ago. We asked around for referrals. Then we met with our first choice, and he was everything we were looking for, so we picked him.Absolutely!

(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
Samara will be 4 weeks old this Tuesday. Wow, has that gone FAST!
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
I'm getting a lot more sleep than I did when Maya was first born but I still feel as if I'm catching up and still a little tired. I'm wondering if it's because I have a toddler too and am feeling really 'pulled in two directions' a lot of the time. Not just physically, also mentally and emotionally as I am trying so hard to give Maya as much attention as she is used to as well as care for and pay attention to Samara.
I know that feeling guilty is something pretty much every mum experiences a lot and I'm definitely no stranger to it. I feel even more guilty these days as, like I said above, I am simply unable to give as much attention to Maya. I look at her and talk to her while I am sitting there breastfeeding Samara but can't really get up and run around and play with her.
She misses me, she's showing it in ways that tells me so. I miss her too, I miss the quiet cuddle times. She's been getting up between 3am and 5am all week this week and coming into our room and Josh gets up to take her back to her bed. She tells him "I watch cartoons on the 'teebee'?" and basically won't go back to sleep.
I think it's because the three of us (Me, Samara and Josh) are in our room and she's alone in her room and she's needing reassurance that she's still a part of the family. It makes me sad that she's feeling this way. She ADORES her baby sister so much it would make your heart melt watching her with Samara and I know things will settle down soon.
Wow, that was long. Just needed to get that off my chest lol.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
Maternal Health Nurse appointment (our alternative to a pediatrician here in Australia) in a couple of weeks.
Samara gained 150 grams to get back to her birth weight and she's put on 200 grams since so that's good. It took ages for Maya to get back to her birth weight. Most likely because breastfeeding was a huge struggle for me the first time around.
(4) Where do you plan to give birth (hospital, birthing center, etc.)? Any particular reasons behind this decision?
I gave birth in a hospital and won't be going that route again (if we have a 3rd).
If a 'next time' happens, I will be seeking out a birthing centre like the one Maya was born in or I will secure the services of a midwife and give birth at home. Hopefully the laws in motion at the moment re. homebirths in Australia will not make it difficult.
Obviously, if there are genuine complications or I have a high-risk pregnancy I will have to go the hospital route but if it is a straightforward pregnancy and labour like the last two than I will be staying away from one.
My labour this time (I still need to sit down and write my birth story) was SO much harder and stressful this time around because they medically managed me in such a way that, not only caused me body to stall labour, but made it freaking hard when it wasn't necessary.
Can you tell I'm still angry about it lol?
(5) Have you been super sensitive to the way things smell or taste now that you're pregnant?
My sense of smell was stronger, yeah.
(6) When did you pick a pediatrician and how did you find them?
Here in Australia, we don't really need to secure the services of a pediatrician as we have what's called Maternal Health and Childcare Services. It's run by the local councils
A Maternal Child Health Nurse in your area comes to your home a few days after your baby is born and asseses, weighs, measures height, checks hips/health etc etc etc. They check the mother out (if the mother has stitches etc) and sit down and gives a tonne of info re. sids/ support services/ basically anything to do with baby/family/mother. It's a fantastic and informative service.
Then, you take your baby to the local Maternal Health Centre the following week and for all the appointments afterward. You can also get immunisations at the centre etc too.
(7) Are there any questions that you'd like to see here in the future?
I thought of a few good ones a few weeks ago but can't remember them at the moment lol.
TTCers: Which cycle are you on? Where in the cycle are you? What, if anything, are you doing to have success TTCing?
Mamas: Attachment parenting: 100% for you, 100% not for you, or something in-between?
In between. I breastfeed, I babywear, I co-sleep (well, from about 3am onwards really).
I have a swing also and a stroller. I do what works for all of us as a family. There are times I need to put her in the swing, no big deal.
BONUS: PIP of your bump or LO or for TTCers...link to your chart!(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? just turned 4 months this past week!
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? I'm tired - he had a bad night last night after his 4 month shots
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Nothing until 6 months for the baby, I'm still having weird issues - bleeding seems to be under control, but I found a lump that we're trying to figure out what's going on.
(4) Where do you plan to give birth (hospital, birthing center, etc.)? Any particular reasons behind this decision? hospital - being 35, there were too many possible complications that could have happened and I wanted to be where they could be handled
(5) Have you been super sensitive to the way things smell or taste now that you're pregnant? I was super sensitive to smells - and smoke especially.
(6) When did you pick a pediatrician and how did you find them? ha, wish I would have done this sooner, but it turned out ok. I didn't pick one until I was in the hospital and I had to pick the pediatrician to check the baby.
Mamas: Attachment parenting: 100% for you, 100% not for you, or something in-between? something in between
BONUS: PIP of your bump or LO or for TTCers...link to your chart! see blog
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
4w2d - wow.
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
Better. Kaya's starting to nap more but only if I nurse her and don't move her. So I've started nursing her in our recliner/glider and just let her nap in my lap or arms. We put my laptop next to the chair and a little tv in the nursery so I don't get bored.
Kaya had her 1 month well baby visit this week and she is finally gaining weight. Actually, she gained 9 oz in a week, so it's like she's playing catch up. I guess the concern about my milk supply is moot now. Doc said it just takes some people longer to produce more hindmilk?
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
My 6 week (but actually 5) check up is on Friday. Kaya has her 2 month appt April 14.
(4) Where do you plan to give birth (hospital, birthing center, etc.)? Any particular reasons behind this decision?
Gave birth in a hospital with a Level III NICU because being a NICU nurse, there's no place I'd rather be. I also switched OBs so I could deliver at a particular hospital because the one I was going to deliver at initially has horrible neonatologists (according to my co-workers; those docs used to work in our unit).
(5) Have you been super sensitive to the way things smell or taste now that you're pregnant?
I think I was actually less sensitive to smells while I was pregnant. Weird, I know. Usually, I'm super sensitive.
(6) When did you pick a pediatrician and how did you find them?
We picked one during the third trimester. We got her name from the nurse who taught our childbirth class. Made and appointment with her for a prenatal visit and liked her so we went with her.
(7) Are there any questions that you'd like to see here in the future?
Breastfeeding goals/plans?
Mamas: Attachment parenting: 100% for you, 100% not for you, or something in-between?
Something in-between. We read the AP book (Dr Sears) and try to adhere to it for the most part - babywearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping (although not really by choice). But our birth bonding was interrupted (which really sucked). I'm not super hard core about anything. I'd love to be able to park her in a swing for a bit to get some things done sometimes or even just shower when B's not home (but she's not having it yet - she'll last a few minutes before she starts to cry).
Yay! You may turn the corner soon...it sounds exactly like what Libby was doing then. A few days later we swaddled her and got her to nap while in her swing (with it on the lowest setting). Then I could get her to sleep, swaddled, in her co-sleeper and it's been that way ever since. But the first 3.5-4 weeks or so she literally had to sleep on or right next to me. So hang in there!
We use her swing for naps...I nurse her or rock her until she's asleep or just about there and then place her in her swing (swaddled) and put it on the low setting. I am in the room with her 99% of the time (I will go potty or check laundry, etc. while she's asleep in it, but that's about it)...her swing is in the living room where I have my laptop (working from home these days) and TV, sound system, etc. (I try to limit TV being on to the times when she's sleeping...yay for DVR). She'll sleep in it for 2-3 hours at a time. Just recently will she sit in the swing and look at the mobile, etc. and it's like 5 minutes, tops. If we do place her in it while she's awake it's generally to do a quick thing like go to the bathroom or for DH prepare her bottle for a feeding.

(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?
she just turned 4 months old yesterday!
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?
I feel a little better after being able to vent here... we are going to sit down and have another talk tomorrow so hopefully we can make some changes soon.
no new milestones to share this week
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?
she just had her 4 month check up and shots... she's 30th percentile for weight (12 lbs 12 oz) and 50th percentile for height (21 1/4")... at her 2 month visit she was 50th percentile for weight and 75th percentile in height, so hopefully she is getting enough milk (the pedi wasn't concerned)
(4) Where do you plan to give birth (hospital, birthing center, etc.)? Any particular reasons behind this decision?
we gave birth at a hospital and didn't really consider any other options. MH is a doctor and there are too many possible complications for either of us to have been ok w/a non hospital birth
(5) Have you been super sensitive to the way things smell or taste now that you're pregnant?
i noticed my sense of smell was increased immediately after my BFP
(6) When did you pick a pediatrician and how did you find them?
we picked one around the beginning of the 3rd tri... MH works at a children's hospital so he just asked around there for a recommendation. we then set up a meeting/interview w/the pedi to see if we liked her

My Food Blog - Good Eats 'n Sweet Treats
Perhaps I spoke too soon. She only napped 20 minutes today. She was up from 12:30 pm until now otherwise...it's almost 10 pm! It's so frustrating. I would die for her to nap 2-3 hours! Soon, I hope. I just nursed her and she's sleeping in my lap...we'll see how long she lasts.
Christine, I was just sitting here trying to remember what I did with Maya in regards to sleep etc. She was exactly the same way hon, as I've mentioned to you before.
Now, I know a lot of people would wag their fingers at me in a 'no-no' gesture for this but, for the longest time, I would lay next to her in the middle of my bed and nurse her to sleep there. Once she was asleep, I would prop pillows around the edges of the bed (none of these pillows were anywhere close to her however, so she couldn't suffocate. She was smack bang in the centre of the bed, laying across the width of it, instead of how we all lie on beds).
I did this for as long as it took for her to be able to roll etc. Once she was more mobile, I would still lay with her on our bed, feed her to sleep and wait until she was asleep long enough to transfer her quickly to her crib.
Now, it wasn't the most convenient for me or Josh. Sometimes we'd have friends over and I'd have to excuse myself to go lay with Maya to get her to sleep but, it got us through in our own make-it-up-as-you-go way. Lol.
Probably not the best advice but thought I'd throw what we did out there.
I do nurse her to sleep at night and just fall asleep with her. I didn't want to co-sleep but it seems the only way I can get any sleep. I tried to nurse her down for a nap in bed last night and she wouldn't fall asleep. I think I'll keep trying though. We have a Cal King bed so I could totally prop pillows around her like you did. I actually kinda did that one morning when she was still asleep when I got up. It's like she can sense when I'm not there, though, because she'll wake up pretty quick once I leave.
We're totally in the make-it-up-as-you-go stage, still. I get kind of discouraged when I hear about people who have routines and schedules because we are not even close to being able to do that. *sigh*
I can totally relate to being feeling discouraged re. everyone else seemingly having routines and such, babies that have naps alone etc...
I was so adamant about routines too with Maya at the beginning. All I knew was it was something you 'needed to get your baby into' to make life easier. All I ended up achieving was feeling frustrated, endlessly rocking a baby that would not stop crying or would not go to sleep anywhere but in my arms.
From that experience I came to a realization about those early newbornish days: screw routines...follow your baby.
Some days she's gonna be wakeful all day and be glued to your boob allllllll day. Some days she's gonna want to sleep all day and not drink as much. Whatever it is, follow her cues hon and try to just flow with it instead of fight it or question it.
There's plenty of time for routines as she gets older and more able to understand things.
I know that having things so all over the map is hard but you're doing an amazing job.
Can you ask someone to come over every other day to take Kaya for a few hours so that you can get some sleep?
I SO feel for you. Bella was the exact same way. I'm sorry to say that it didn't change until she was about 4 months old. Do you have a sling/carrier? I would wear B in the moby and she would sleep for an hour or even 2 as long as I was moving... looking back it seems crazy that I would pace the house for hours to keep her asleep but it worked and I cleaned and did laundry
So I guess it worked out ok for us because I got stuff done.
(1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? As of today, 7w4d.
(2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Still feeling queasy/nauseated, bloated and have lots of stomach gas. I'm a little frustrated because I feel hungry and know I need to eat, but I have a lot of food aversions and find nothing appetizing these days.
(3) Next appointment date? Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? Our 2nd u/s was last Thursday...we actually got to see baby's heartbeat! It was an amazing moment. MH got a little emotional. Baby was measuring right on target with my O date (not LMP). Next u/s is next Monday! My doctor does an u/s every 2 weeks during the 1st tri.
(4) Where do you plan to give birth (hospital, birthing center, etc.)? Any particular reasons behind this decision? We plan to give birth at a hospital (Kapiolani). My OB/GYN exclusively delivers there. I asked why she doesn't deliver anywhere else and her reasons made sense to me. Kapiolani also has the only Level III NICU in the Pacific, which is comforting, just in case.
(5) Have you been super sensitive to the way things smell or taste now that you're pregnant? I'm not sure if I'm more sensitive, but I'm definitely having smell and taste aversions. Just over the weekend, the smells of brown gravy, corn tortillas and cooked teriyaki chicken made me feel sick to my stomach.
(6) When did you pick a pediatrician and how did you find them? N/A for now....
(7) Are there any questions that you'd like to see here in the future? I posted some during the last check-in.
