With all the news coverage on the infantino slings...which I just bought a few weeks ago at a consignment sale:( and I was also given a baby bjorn by a friend. What slings carriers are ok for use before 4 months? I would like to be able to wear him out for walks or while doing housework
Re: BR: carriers/slings
This is a good website: http://www.thebabywearer.com/
I used a peanut shell and a sleepy wrap (which is just like the moby) when my DD was a newborn.
I'd skip the sling and get a wrap carrier (Moby, Sleepy Wrap, etc.)...there is a way to tie it like a sling.

a wrap carrier is awesome - and very versitile. I use the moby a lot, but if I'm going to use it out in public I tie it on me before I leave because it's a PITA to try to tie it in a wet parking lot and not drag the ends.
I don't have an infant seat that comes out of the car (and Jack isn't old enough for our stoller) so I use carriers a lot. I use a sling quite a bit for errands because it's a lot quicker to put on than the moby - but Jack is too big to get scrunched up in there and I also face his head out. If you see someone wearing a sling and you can't see the tiny baby at all then it's probably a dangerous situation.
I also have an ergo but didn't get the infant insert so he's not big enough to use it. I have read it's more ergonomically correct for mom and baby than a bjorn - but if you don't plan to use it all the time like we plan to then you should be ok - lots of people like the bjorn.

For Diaper Chatter this week, we are discussing baby carriers instead of diapers. I was recently asked by a customer about what I personally preferred to use. This was my reply to her:
I love my hotsling for the first few months. Very easy to use, there is no way you can put it on wrong. Baby is very secure, and it holds them very close. The weight is on your waist, if you have your shoulder fabric spread out on your shoulder. My husband loves using the Ergo with their new heart to heart infant insert for our son (now 5 weeks old). I think it is a guy thing though, it is sporty looking and doesn't have the look of a pouch which he prefers not to wear in public.
Even with the heart to heart insert, you still get a little roly-poly head action, hence my preference for the hotsling. You can easily prevent the roly-poly head movement in the Ergo with the infant insert. Get a small receiving blanket and roll it up, then put it behind their head neck-brace style. Just make sure they are facing you and not breathing into the fabric, but it secures them nicely.
Now, once you hit 4 months and have some head control, I am Ergo all the way. You can't beat the comfort, I can still easily put my 40 pound 4 year in it and carry her without any pain.
Babyhawks are great until about 20 pounds for me. I have one and do like it, it is very pretty and fashionable, and is fun to use. Comfort level is there until about a year of age, but again, a little roly poly with the head until about 3-4 months (the receiving blanket trick works here, too).
So, in summary, I use:
Hotsling only until about 3 months, hubby uses Ergo + infant insert
BabyHawk/Ergo 3-12 months
Ergo 12+ months.
My only caution with the Hotsling, and it involves a terrible mommy-moment that my middle daughter would hold over my head in a heartbeat if she read this....
It is very easy to use hands-free, and for that reason I get a little carried away with going at my normal pace with a newborn in it. A few years ago, when Camille was about a month old, I was grocery shopping with my then 2.5 year old, and a 3 year old that I babysat full time. I was reaching up on a shelf to get some canned veggies, and Camille's little head (which protruded a little from my waist in the pouch, she was snuggled and asleep), got rammed into a stack of french cut beans, knocking them over on her and giving her head a bump. I felt so horrible that I used my newborn as a battering ram against the canned food aisle, I remembered getting tears in my eyes from the guilt! So, as comfortable and easy as they are to wear, slow down a little and remember the baby is in there (and I may be the only mother here who has done that, so I am not presuming that you all are as klutzy as I am!)
Have a great week everyone, email me with any questions about the new programs/coupons/ wait list/my address to have children's services check on my pouch wearing skills...
