Hey Jaime, since you're a vet, I was wondering if I could get your opinion/advice on something. This is actually probably a pretty simple question but I just wanted to make sure...
We had our male pup neutered last week and I asked our vet's staff for a e-collar for him (and I insisted about 4 times =P) but they said no. Instead they just sent us home with pain meds. We gave him the pain meds but soon enough, he started licking the area and after the weekend, it was all bruised, so we took him back. Then, not only did we have to get the e-collar (which I wanted in the first place) but we had to get antibiotics too because it's infected. I got pretty upset at the vet office (maybe pg hormones escalated it) because not only did we have to make another trip down to the vet office (we don't live very close to them and we're super busy these days because we're moving), we ended up spending more money than just getting an e-collar in the first place, AND worse of all, our pup has an infection and it will take even longer for him to heal/recover from the surgery. So I was wondering...is it normal to not recommend e-collars for post-neutering/spay? I always thought that e-collars were made just for that purpose (to prevent them from licking post-surgery). Maybe I'm wrong? But before I get too upset at our vet's staff (who refused us the e-collar in the first place), I just wanted to get a second opinion...TIA!!
