Smart people - I need direction

I have to submit a writing sample with my college application.  How are these formatted? Is it a "To whom it may concern" kinda thing or just a straight paper as to why I'm worthy of going to their college?

I'm looking for examples on google and my flipping computer keeps shutting down so please don't point me back there right now, as my computer is on it's last warning of being shoved off the desk due to my frustration.

Re: Smart people - I need direction

  • I thought a writing sample was a paper/essay/article that you have already written. I didn't know you had to write something totally new unless the college gave you a specific topic to write about....but I went to engineering school...so I'm not too familiar with a lib arts focus.

  • If there isn't a prompt to write about, then it would be something you've already written.  A paper or an article...something that shows how well you can write.
  • They gave me two topics to choose from or I would totally send them a paper I wrote on the battle of Iwo Jima.  War papers are always good to send to private liberal arts colleges ;)
  • I would do it in more of an essay format (not a letter "To whom it may concern").

    Good Luck...sounds like fun!
