Pork in Senate Passed Bailout Bill?!?!

Now this is why this bill just ticks me off......

Tax earmark "extenders" in the bailout bill.
- Virgin Island and Puerto Rican Rum (Section 308)
- American Samoa (Sec. 309)
- Mine Rescue Teams (Sec. 310)
- Mine Safety Equipment (Sec. 311)
- Domestic Production Activities in Puerto Rico (Sec. 312)
- Indian Tribes (Sec. 314, 315)
- Railroads (Sec. 316)
- Auto Racing Tracks (317)
- District of Columbia (Sec. 322)
- Wool Research (Sec. 325)

Some of those additions have been assailed by spending watchdogs as "pork," like the $6 million for the makers of kids' wooden arrows, according to a summary of the bill released by the Senate Finance Committee.

  • Unfortunately, I can't say I'm surprised.?
  • McCain voted "yes" on a bill with all of these earmarks?  I wish there was a smiley with a raised eyebrow.

  • I don't understand this either.  I'm guessing they are directly targeting specific individuals to change their votes and these are essentially perfectly-tailored bribes.

Is there any way Congress will ever change how they do business?  What's the point of this, because they don't have enough time to vote on each of these issues separately?

  • I wouldn't call mine safety or rescue funds "pork" but Puerto Rican rum?  Racetracks?  Um, yes, those seem to be inappropriate measures to sneak into this bill.  Yikes.

  • What's with all the handouts to places that don't even have a vote on this issue?

  • Ugh - why can't we have honest politicans? I know oxymoron but still, it would be so nice to trust the people we elect...

  • Didn't the bailout just get attached to some other bill? If so then the senators had no choice but to vote for both if they wanted the bailout to pass.

I'm still convinced there aren't a handfull of true fiscal conservatives left in the senate.
