Duty ? - importing furniture from the US

We've found a kitchen table at Pottery Barn that we really like.

Our options are to either go over, buy it in Detroit and bring it back over the border, or have it shipped from Toronto.  I'm trying to compare the 2 prices...if they are relatively close, I'm just going to ship it.

Does anyone know how much duty you pay on furniture when you import it from the States.  I know I have to pay GST and PST, but it isn't made in the US, so I will likely have to pay duty on it as well.

Try the link. So, if the table is actually manufacturered in the US it should be duty exempt coming into Canada...BUT if it was manufacturered elsewhere, it's subject to duty. HTH.

  • You might really get screwed.   My friend ordered some crib bedding for her new baby that was supposed to come in at $350.  She paid over $600 for it when all was said and done with duty.  (And she was furious.)

The longer you stay in the States the more you're able to bring back duty free.  I'd check into that.

Or else, you might be able to get it custom made.  I'm lucky to have a furniture making husband.  I just show him a picture and he whips it up for me.  Do you have anyone in your life that can do that?  If not, there are companies -- some actually don't charge all that much.  (While others are astronomical -- the really expensive ones usually just work with designers, though.)

OMG! I hope it was worth it! That's insane.

We had the same issue with our baby furniture.  We ended up finding someone relatively locally who carried it because the duty to buy it in the States and bring it over was ridiculous.

  • Are you sure Pottery Barn in Canada can get it?  I found furniture from Pottery Barn that I wanted, went to the store (in Canada) to order it and they can't even get it for me in Canada.  My only option is to go buy it in the US and bring it back.  (So, I'm still holding off hoping to find something in Canada that I like.)

Yep - I already called the store.  One didn't care it, but the Eaton Centre has 3 in stock.

Sometimes I feel like it's all so random. I was terrified of crib bedding and a rug that we got from PBK in the US which was about $475USD. I thought we'd be slammed with ridiculous fees but we were only charged $60CDN from UPS when it arrived which was the GST+PST. UPS didn't even charge us brokerage fees. Haha I even questioned the guy if we'd be getting a bill in the mail later.
