**Noron**

I just found out this morning that I'm not supposed to wait until my immigration paperwork is done to change my name. I know I saved your lovely post (I think it was you...) about the name change process, but I can't for the life of me find it... do you still have it?

Hooray for name changing!  And I miraculously found it, even though I can't seem to be able to find my post history anymore.  (WTF, knot?)

One follow up: Social Security effed up my name.  My maiden is now my middle, but they had my original middle as my middle...so I have to re-do that.  UGH.

    Good luck!

That's annoying that they messed up your middle name. I'm just about ready to smack everyone involved in the name change process.

Originally I had planned on waiting until I got conditional residency to change my name because I didn't want anything to get confused with two names. Then this morning I met with the people to file the paperwork and they said it would be better to change it now so I don't need to get a new greencard when I change it later. This seemed to make sense, so (as advised) I used my new married name on all the paperwork.

Then I went to the SSA to change my name (which I thought was the first thing I needed to do), and they said I needed to change it with "immigration" first (don't even get me started on what "immigration" means... they said it as though it was a person I can just go and talk to). Then she put the name change through anyway and said I had better go to the immigration office right away to change my name with them because momentarily they would be getting the request from SSA and there would be a problem if it wasn't changed with them yet.

So I ran over to immigration (which I finally got her to explain was a USCIS office not far from the SSA), but they had JUST closed. I went home to check their hours and found out that they are appointment only. Changing your name was not an option for booking an appointment online, so I called the USCIS info number.

After listening to the frickin' 5-minute recording 3 times and not hearing an option that applied to me, I finally picked "change my address" at random just so I could speak to a person. The person told me that everyone (including U.S. citizens) needs to change their name with the court system when they get married. I told him I know this to be incorrect, and he admitted that he didn't really have any idea what I am supposed to do and that I should just go online and make an appointment (which he didn't even know was possible until I told him).

AARGH!!!!! Anyway, that's my name change rant. If this makes my conditional residency processing take longer, I'm gonna be reeeeaaaally sad.

Raeyn, where are you from?? I can't imagine having to deal with immigration issues. My best friend at school just got married to a man from Belize and they are having to deal with immigration stuff right now. PITA.

I'm from Canada, but with all the paperwork I have to deal with you'd think I was from Mars.

That said, my grievance isn't so much having to file the forms and dish out the cash (although I had to drop $1700 this morning to file for conditional residency, which I swear is a status they made up so you'll have to give them even more money two years later when you can finally file for an actual green card). What really bugs me is that NO ONE can tell me what I'm supposed to do. Everyone has a different opinion on the proper process for all this, and the only thing they seem to agree on is that if you do it wrong you're screwed. :(

    Canada isn't Mars?

I kid, I kid - I'm frustrated for you!  I'm not even freaking done with the process (THANKS, SSA!) and I just keep saying over and over, "I can't be the first woman in the history of time to get married."  I don't understand how NO ONE, ANYWHERE really knows what you're supposed to do to resolve this!  It should be a simple frigging thing to do, seeing as millions of people get married everyday and many of them want to change their names...but nooooooo, everyone acts like it's the first time they have even heard of any of this.

So I feel your pain...and I don't even have to deal with the immigration bullshiit!  GL and keep me updated.
