I thought I'd share the emergency veterinary services hotline-- it's not free (charge $40 or $50).

I had to call tonight because the kitten got into the silica gel packet that come in shoes/ purses/ medications and I couldn't find accurate/ official information online about toxicity. These are the packets that say DO NOT EAT. They are not poisonous but can cause obstructions.
I called my vet, the mass vet referral clinic and angell memorial and they all told me to call that number.
Re: pet peeps
Thank you for the info.
How is your kitty doing?
He's fine! Thanks
I couldn't tell if he or the dog ate any though... so I was a little worried. We just have to keep an eye on blockages!
Good to know it's not really poisonous-- I was always curious about that!
You're a lot calmer than I would be. :-)
My two cats are my world (besides the H, of course. Well, they come before him. Haha.) and I would be freaking out right now.
I always thought those silica gel packets were so weird. I know logically that there is a point but they're such an inconvenience - having to dig them out of everything new.
GL with the kitty! Hope all is well. :-)
My kitten is 7 months and is the craziest thing ever. He gets into trouble daily so I'm used to it. I wasn't so calm when he gave himself a traumatic head injury/ massive eye infection 3 weeks ago though!
Thanks for posting this because I would never have known! I always make the salespeople throw those things away because I was under the impression they were poinsonous.
My dog isn't a trash digger, but once she did get into it an ate a disposable doan's heating pad. 2 straight days of projectile vomiting and 2 ER vet visits later I said I was double bagging that kind of stuff if I had to bring it into the house at all!
