Desales Flats?

My husband and I are moving to Cincinnati in May.  I grew up in Columbus so I'm famiIiar with the area but not enough to know exact locations of good neighborhoods outside of the city.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me about the area of town that DeSales Flats is in.  I know right around UC campus isn't the best part of town, so I'm not too sure where this fits in.  This place is on the corner of Woodburn and Lincoln ave. across the street from Purcell Marian high school it looks like.  Any help would be great.

We were also looking around Hyde Park, so any rental places any of you would suggest around there too?  TIA!

Re: Desales Flats?

  • I would look elsewhere.  The neighborhood is a little rough.  The area around Xavier University (Walnut Hills/East Walnut hills) used to be very nice but not so much now.  Hyde Park is much nicer.  Oakley is a slightly less expensive neighborhood next to Hyde Park.

  • As the PP said, Hyde Park and Oakley are better choices. You could also check out Mt. Adams, which is closer to downtown. Good luck... and welcome!

  • It's a little rough.  It's not the worst neighborhood, but there are definitely better ones out there.  While one street may be fine, 2 blocks away isn't great, kwim?

Definitely look into Hyde Park- there are lots of rental places around there.

  • If you want to live in an urban area, I would suggest the Gateway Quarter. We love that part of town. If we could afford a top floor condo we would move there.

Now we live in Columbia Tusculum and we love it. H takes the bus to work (last top before downtown on an express). If you drive you can be downtown quickly or anywhere pretty easily. I work on the west side and it is very easy to get around the city. We have a couple of restaurants. It is not a big neighborhood, but it is cute. During nice weather we walk to Mt. Lookout.

  • Well, I wouldn't mind living at DeSales since it is right across the street from Suzie Wong's and Mocha!  I go to both frequently!  Seriously, though, the building and parking look secure from what I could tell.  I would have no problems living there.

We live in Oakley (near Hyde Park) and like it a lot. On my walks lately I've seen several apartments for rent.  Maybe check Craigslist.

  • We live in a small fairly nice area surrounded by a rough area.  It's one thing to visit an area like that, it's another thing to live there.  Your building, house, street, whatever might be safe but you'll still have police driving by with sirens, the occasional drunk wandering up to you, even a few hookers, stuff like that. It wears on you after a while.  I can't remember if you live in Atlanta or Georgia.  I lived in Atlanta in Virginia-Highland for a year.  Hyde Park/Oakley are similar.  The Gaslight/Ludlow area of Clifton are also similar.  Gaslight has more of the funky, artsy feeling.

  • I would look somewhere else...  Oakley is great, Mt. Lookout is great, a little further out, but very central is Reading.

  • Thank you all so much for the recs.  We'll look into those additional neighborhoods.  We can't wait to get up there!
  • I want to say that it is hard to find nice rental units in Cincinnati.  The Desales Flats looks really nice compared to other places. It does border sketchy neighborhood.  I found that living in Cincinnati you're almost always bordering some kind of sketchy neighborhood (things are kind of street by street).  I would check it out.  There is also a nice apartment complex in Oakley/Hyde Park that is accross the street from Hyde Park Plaza if you need another choice.
