Would you test your own DNA?

My local silly radio morning show had a who is more Irish bet going on and as part of their evidence, they had their DNA tested for ancestral origins. Basically, the test indicated where their ancestors were from, which areas they identified with both originally and in migration.  I thought it sounded pretty cool as I have one grandparent that is a big old question mark.  Plus, being part Hispanic, and knowing Hispanic roots come from all over, I thought it would be cool to find out exactly where they come from.

So, my question is: is this something any of you would consider just for fun?

Re: Would you test your own DNA?

  • That's pretty interesting. I would do it for educational purposes.  I think it would be great to know more about my background.  I have no clue on most of my family history. Mom is from S Korea and the records aren't the greatest.

I think it would be very cool to know!! I'm white, and my maiden name is Scottish -- that's all I know. I could be like .0005% Scottish, and the other be of 99.9995% unknown origin.

Whether or not I'd actually get tested though, would depend on how involved the process was and how much it cost.

  • Most do it yourself DNA kits require you to swab the inside of your cheek, so not invasive, no blood, etc. The site that the radio people used charge $130. Right now, I wouldn't pay that much. But later down the line when I get back on top of my finances, I probably would do it.

  • i think it would be cool to do for fun (esp since we arent realy sure about all of our ancestry), but i don't think i'd pay a whole lot to do it, at least in my current financial situation.

Why aren't they live this week?  Are they on spring break?

  • They were live through Wednesday. I think they took off yesterday due to hangovers :) and probably today to round out the week.

  • I would love to do this! There is a new show coming out where celebrities do this and they find out who they are related to. The only one I remember from the promo on Oprah was that Brooke Shields finds out she is a descent of a king of france. It was pretty interesting to see
  • I've actually thought about doing this. I don't know my father except to know (at least my Mom thought she knew) that he's Israeli, and my Mom is Black but mixed with some Native American and English from a few generations ago. Busy trying to pay off credit cards right now, but will probably do it in the next couple of years.

  • My husband and I heard about this on I think the Colbert Report - he was really into it for awhile, and I was thinking about, for his birthday, getting him the kit and also one for Ike (a dog one, to figure out his breed - not the one to find out where his ancestors are from. Obviously).

Dandy I thought about doing this for our dog as well. I have no clue what she is.  She's a collie of some sort, but what else is mixed in we have no clue.

  • I would love to do this! I have a great idea of what I am, but my H and his family are pretty clueless when it comes to their background (they're Southern and that's good enough LOL!) I would like for us both to do it so our kids will have a better idea of their heritage.
