Family Room advice ... PIP

Okay ladies I will probably be posting this on D & R too. But would like some advice from y'all.

I have been BURNT out from the last year and half of renovating and decorating. This was the last room to be done, hence the reason I am out of ideas and money. As you will notice this room is cream color, that is because all the other rooms in my house are painted fabulous colors and I wanted to have one room that was somewhat white and I thought this room would be the good choice as its partially underground. We don't have alot money but will after the wedding expenses are over. I also don't like the red fireplace wall. I am really wanting to get rid of that dark coffee table as the couches are darker so I am thinking about padding and fabricing it to have a fabric table instead. I really need to get some art and such its just so hard to find something you like and can afford. I thought after the wedding I could hang some pics of the nuptials in this room.

Any other suggestions ladies?

  • Sorry I don't know how to make them appear on the post rather than a link. Does anyone know for future reference.

Man ... looking at those picture made me realize how badly I need window treatments. I have no clue what kind would be suitable??

I agree that the red doesn't look good.  Maybe paint it a dark brown to match your couches (I'm assuming they are brown, hard to tell on my laptop)

Some sort of photos would be good as well.

  • ok, some more tips..

Are you able to move the tv?  Maybe put it on the empty wall behind the couch.  I just think that the fireplace and entertainment unit detract from each other.  maybe if the wall is a different color it won't be so bad.

I also think that maybe the entertainment unit might be a little small for the room.  Assuming you keep the tv stand, could you do something like this and maybe put a rug down?  Please don't mind my crappy paint drawing.  It is probably no where near scale, and doesn't show the couch parallel to the fireplace but still a little behind it.

I will keep thinking and definately let you know if I come up with anything else.

  • I think the room would look good painted a richer, darker neutral colour, like a warmer beige. Paint the red fireplace a darker shade of whatever colour you paint. Maybe put a console table underneath the window behind the couch with some plants or a lamp or something on it. Throw down an area rug, hang some pictures or art on the walls, and I think you'll be set. I think you can make some dramatic changes in that room for minimal money.

This. I think putting a warmer tone, not something drastically dark but maybe caramel would make the space feel warmer. Add an area rug, some plants and warm lighting and you'd have a fabulous space. I agree with painting the fireplace wall, maybe a slightly darker color than whatever you choose for your walls? ART would definitely make a huge difference.

  • wow, fabulous light for a basement (jealous).

I like the other suggestions too, but I understand your feelings for wanting to keep a light neutral. One thing that stood out for me is the art work above the fireplace looks a little bit small for the space. did you renovate the floors yourself? Where did you get them from? Our basement has ugly parquet right now, would love some nice laminate or even hardwood!

  • I understand the logic of having a blank slate in one room if the rest of the house is bold, but I don't think it works. Our old place was painted bold colours, and I painted the kitchen white to offset the drama of the other rooms. When we had the place repainted before we listed it, the painters painted the kitchen first, a nice light tan, and it looked so much better, even against the burgundy living room walls. I think your room would benefit from a richer, warmer colour.

  • Here is what I would do

    - do a darker neutral colour on the walls. Not too dark but not so close to white

    - area rug that goes under the couches and the coffee table (in a similar colour to the walls)

    - bigger art over the fireplace (or a mirror)

    - art of photos on the walls. I would do a series that match and have them in matching frames (square)

    - accent pillows (in whatever colour your art is and if you keep the red wall then have some red in them)

    - leave the coffee table as is - although if it is in your budget get a bigger one (more square)

    - sidetables

    - if you were going to change the entertainment cabinet I would go lower and longer

    - for window coverings I would probably just do a simple bamboo blind (the roll kind - you could match it to your lamp)

    - you could also put a long cabinet along the back wall (under the window behind the couch) for additional storage. Or you could put a long bench there that could hold extra blankets etc and you could use it as additional seating if needed

  • I agree with painting it a warmer color.

For a quick fix, go to Home Depot and buy some plants - they have a one year guarantee (believe me, they honor it) and usually really good prices.  At Walmart and London Drugs you can buy the nice pots to put them in for really decent prices.  Plants really do a lot for a room.

Window treatments I might get some nice wood blinds.  I'm not a huge fan of curtains, but in our last basement we needed to hide our windows so we did floor to ceiling curtains to give the illusion that there were big windows.  However we didn't get great light in there like you do so I'm not sure how I'd feel about the look when you open windows.

I actually don't mind the coffee table, but if you want a new one I'd put it on the side with a couple of plants and maybe some candles.

Also, you could get some couch pillows or throws to add some color to the room.  Maybe find colors that you've used in other parts of the house?  That's where I'd prefer red vs on the wall.

Thank you! I'll do that from now on :)

We didn't install the floors ourselves no. We purchased them from a local (edmonton) place called Timbertown on sale from $2.50 to .99. We did the entire house, except bathrooms, in laminate for uniformity and FH has bad allergies so carpet was not a option. Its the really thick stuff and its beveled like real hardwood so it looks pretty good.
