PSA: If you live in a house with a basement...
get a backup generator! We lost power for 30 hours this weekend and our basement flooded. We had 6 inches of water and we lost so much stuff. Nothing really valuable, but we had to throw out and clean out a ton of boxes that were on low shelves. A lot of books and old photo albums and I think some of our furniture is damaged too. 
I still haven't looked through my old filing cabinets, but I am pretty sure all of my old tax paper work and a ton of my lesson plans are gone. I can't bring myself to take a look.

I wish we had a back up. Two of our neighbors had them running all weekend and they were fine. Our neighbor across he street had stanley steamer there all day Mon & Tues to clean out their finished basement. yuck.
At least its not as bad as other people in NJ. Some folks are still out of their homes and have many feet of water! crazy!

Oh no, that is terrible! I am sorry all your stuff got destroyed. That sounds like my worst nightmare. How awful.
But what is a backup generator? I need to know, we have a basement.
