Just had another ultrasound (they're getting pretty regular now because they need to make sure the boys are growing at the same rate) and good lord but I have big kids. My doctor is confident that it's nothing to do with the gestational diabetes - they're not extra fat, just big - and he's happy with their size.
Today one of them weighed 2.45kg (5.4lbs) and the other was 2.428kg (5.3lbs) - this means they're already nearly at the average birthweight for twins who are delivered at 36 weeks (5.5lbs), and they're also both over 1lb larger than the average singleton is at this stage. I know that ultrasounds can be off with weight estimates, but yikes!
Their heads are still measuring ahead too - both are a bit over 36 weeks. We shall attribute that to being geniuses.
I think I'm giving birth to enormous baby coneheads.

That's awesome Lisa! Big, healthy twins! Woo hoo! I bet that makes you feel more confident should you deliver them sooner than later. That said, is your doctor talking c-section?
How are you feeling? I am so excited for you guys. And thinking of you a lot too. I know how exhausted J and I have been with Libby and to think you're going to have TWO?!? Will you have extra help? I sure hope so. I know your MIL is nearby and that you have a love/hate relationship, but is she coming to over an extra pair of hands in the beginning. Or friends? Seriously. I hope so. If only for a couple of hours/day so you can rest and have a shower. It makes a world of difference.

Yup, I definitely feel more confident since they're not too small. The uber high risk specialist said today that even if something should happen and I went into labor today, he's confident that they're big enough and strong enough to be OK - they might need to be on oxygen for a day or two just to make sure their lungs are working properly, but he wouldn't have any major concerns. So that was nice to hear! Obviously we still want to hang in there until 35-36 weeks, but it makes me feel a bit more relaxed to know that at this stage we're probably OK no matter what.
I'm feeling...heh, you know it's funny - some days I feel like I could go on forever and it would be fine, and other days I just want it over now.
As far as help goes, Ben will be home for 5 weeks after the babies are born (he gets 1 week of parental leave, and then is taking 4 weeks of vacation time - he's got heaps built up, luckily!), so at the very least we'll have each other to tag team with. I also have a couple friends that have offered to stop by occasionally, and of course MIL - as you said, we have our differences, but I know she wants to pitch in. My mom is also arriving May 2 or 3, which will probably be when the babies are around 4 weeks old, and she'll stay for 2 weeks. Hopefully that will be enough to get us through the initial adjustment period!
ETA: Sorry, forgot to reply about the c-section! Both babies are still head down, which means we'll try for natural - my doctors prefer to go that way whenever possible (they're not anti-c-section, but also not incision happy). I think my odds are around 35-40% of actually making it through both births that way (although 50% of twin births are planned c-sections and the other 50% are natural, something like 5-10% of the natural ones end up needing a c-section for the second twin, or that's the impression I get anyway). So unless the babies go into duress or their heads keep ballooning to the point where they wouldn't fit through my cervix, I'm looking at pushing out two. Which is good, but at the same time makes me feel like this:
yay for big healthy babies!
My brothers (twins) were born at 41 weeks (my poor mom!) and were 6lbs, 6oz and 7lbs 10oz. Now that I have an idea of what this means, I am astonished at the almost 8lb twin!
I hear you...you've managed SO much thus far...it won't be long now! SO exciting! Is the nursery ready? Do you have all of your gear? Libby is 8 weeks on Monday and I am just finishing up her nursery decor.
Only one week paternity leave? I guess it's better than nothing, but sheesh! Makes me mad. Dads need PTO too. Good thing he saved up the extra weeks. J was home for 10 days with us and it was amazing. Even now...he's back to school and work, but he's home most of the day and it's been really nice. I am sort of sad to head back to work and miss this time toegther as a family.
Sounds like with your mom and his mom you'll have those first tenuous weeks covered (I imagine they are even more challenging with two newborns). I could not have done this without my mom here. Seriously. She's been great. And not one word, really, about what we are doing/not doing...it's been amazing. She's just being a support without commentary. It's weird, but once Libby hit four weeks things settled down finally...now we're definitely getting into our rhythm...nearly four weeks later. Not that she doesn't keep us on our toes, but we're not so anxious/panicky anymore. Probably helps that she's a chunky baby and feels sturdy (she's nearly 16 lbs!) so we aren't as worried about handling her, etc.
I love that they're giving you a go at vaginal birth...good for you and your docs! Are you thinking of going without pain meds or ??? I am sure whatever happens, you'll be in great hands and the most important thing is to get your littles here safely and keep you safe too. I am so excited for you guys! Woo hoo!
