Taxes

Has anyone filed their Taxes yet- if so did you file under your married name or maiden name?

I am going to my parents house tomorrow to finally file (I use their software) and after thinking about it a while I figured I would file under my maiden name since that was my name for all of 2009 and that is the name on my W-2  etc. Just wondering if anyone had filed yet and what you did...

Re: Taxes

  • I just did mine earlier this week and I used my married name. I was informed that if your name has officially been changed thru Social Security (gotten your new SS card) you use your married name. Your SSN didn't change and that's what they use.

    Good luck!

  • I purposely held off on changing my name until after I filed my taxes and filed my FAFSA so I didn't have to rush to change everything super quick before my FAFSA was due.
  • I filed under my maiden name. I was told that since I got married in January that it does not fall under the 2009 tax season. However, my name was also not changed at the time I filed.

  • Ditto eskamo.  I haven't changed my name yet, but even if I had I think I would have filed under maiden.  That's what my W2 came as and such.

  • I actually did them the day I changed my name-it wasn't planned that way. I went to H&R Block and just asked what to do. I was told to file under my maiden name, because that was my name on 12/31/09. According to the accountant you're supposed to file whatever you are as of the last day of the year. I got my refund without any issues, so I'm going to say it's fine to do it that way.

I'm soooo glad you asked this 'cause I would have left it to the last minute and then had no idea what to do. Thanks for the input, everyone!

  • Just got my refunds back, federal and state (WI). So the married name does work for 2009 taxes. BTW, I also consulted H&R block on the name so that's weird that there are two responses to the same question.

So the verdict is that it doesn't really matter? That's good to know!

  • FYI... The tax software I used instraucted me to use the name that is currently on my SSN card- so since I have already changed my name with SSA I used my married name- when I got to the point where you load the info on your W-2 it insturcted me to list the name printed on my W-2 so there I put my maiden name...

Thanks for all of the responses! = )
