Help me name some people

I was dragged to campus today by DH under the assumption that I would get some work done on my novel.  So far, not so much luck.

I'm stuck on names and I'm having a hard time skipping them to come back later.  When all is said and done I'm submitting to Harlequin.

Main lady character, first and last name

Main man character, her love interest, first and last time

Man's son, adorable subplot, first and maybe middle name?

Any ideas would be really helpful, I'm terrible at naming anything ever (god help us if we ever have children).  It won't get published most likely, so you won't get any credit, except that I will love you forever.

Ooh, I love naming things. I'm helping one of my old professors with a book she's writing and I just got to assign pseudonyms to a whole bunch kids she mentions in it. So much fun!

Where are your characters from? Any particular nationality or ethnicity?

  • They're all in VA though the woman moved there from NY (state not city).  The boy is about 5 years old.  I'm trying to avoid naming the woman starting with a J.  I don't like the name Steven or any variation of that.

     They're all WASPs.

  • Oh, and the names should all sound American though I'm trying to avoid last names like Jones, Johnson, Smith, etc.  Thanks for helping!

  • ohh fun! Is this present day? How wealthy are they? This may determine the "trendiness" of my answers (i.e. Sterling I pulled from my best friend's days of prep school..she was in love with this kid named sterling winston)

    I really like Meredith Hughes..

maybe Jillian or Rachel? Sorry, no help with last names

    Man: Sterling, Jacob, Michael, William

Son: hmm I'll think about it and get back to you

  • Yes, thank you everyone for the awesome suggestions!!  These are really great.  I'll mull it over and pick something and whatever is left over I can use for subcharacters.  WOOT!

I got about 1500 words (5.5 pages) today for 5 hours of working/distracted by knotting.  I need about 55,0000 words so it's going to take awhile I'm afraid.

  • What's your basic plot? Obviously if submitting to Harlequin it's smutty, but who doesn't love a little smut?! This is exciting, I can't wait to see how it develops!

  • I'm writing for the Harlequin "American Romance" (there are a lot of subgenres for Harlequin) which doesn't have as much smut as, say, their "Blaze" books.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to share the basic plot.  I love you guys, but anyone on the Internet can see these boards, they show up in google searches, and I don't want someone to steal my idea before I have the chance to try and make it work :)

Good point! I always forget about that. Well, anyway, good luck!
