McCain pulling out of MI

OK, I have to admit, when I read this all I could think was "when did he invade?"  Seems like an odd choice of verbiage.

Anyway, here's the story:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/1008/McCain_pulling_out_of_Michigan.html

John McCain is pulling out of Michigan, according to two Republicans, a stunning move a month away from Election Day that indicates the difficulty Republicans are having in finding blue states to put in play.

McCain will go off TV in Michigan, stop dropping mail there and send most of his staff to more competitive states, including Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida.   Wisconsin went for Kerry in 2004, Ohio and Florida for Bush.

McCain's campaign didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Republicans had been bullish on Michigan, hopeful that McCain's past success in the state in the 2000 primary combined with voter dissatisfaction with Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm and skepticism among blue-collar voters about Barack Obama could make it competitive.

McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin spent the night after the GOP convention at a large rally in Macomb County, just outside Detroit.  The two returned later last month for another sizable event in Grand Rapids.

But recent polls there have shown Obama extending what had been a small lead, with the economic crisis damaging an already sagging GOP brand in a state whose economy is in tatters.

A McCain event planned for next week in Plymouth, Michiigan, has been canceled

I'm surprised - Obama's lead is growing there, but it doesn't seem certain. Seems like a gamble on McCain's part.

Re: McCain pulling out of MI

  • But everything McCain does is a gamble. He's  a maverick, remember?

  • I've heard a state or two that Obama's pulled out of - Georgia I think? But I believe Michigan is closer than those. Interesting move.

  • I never understood why Michigan was considered a swing state. The polls must have been close here, but I frankly didn't think McCain had a snowball's chance in hell of winning this state. No way, no how.
  • Please please please will he pull out of Minnesota, too? He's trailing by a lot and can't possibly expect to win.

He's in New York, too.  Maybe he thinks blue still means republican?

    That actually made me LOL.

  • I wish that both of them would pull out of PA because I'm sick of the political onslaught, but my guess is that that won't happen. ;-)

  • Sorry I havent' had a chance to reply - pesky work - but does anyone think this might hurt his chances there even more?  Caden, I know you said that he never stood a chance, but the polls have been pretty close.  Is there a reaction on the part of voters that were leaning toward voting for MCP that they've been "abandoned" so to speak?  I suppose if he was going to lose it doesn't matter by how much.

I wish I could tell you but I don't know. I'm disappointed but not at McCain, just at my state.

I still don't know why the polls are close here. It's a very blue state.
