Donating a car ?

DH's truck is 17 yo, has 250K miles and sort of runs.  It's also a rust bucket that is slowly melting into the driveway.  He no longer drives it either.  Has anyone donated a car before?  Was it worth it or do you think with the condition of DH's vehicle it'd be better to sell it outright for whatever we could get?

Re: Donating a car ?

  • I donated my old car to Goodwill.  The transmission went out and GW towed it for free.  That alone was worth the donation!  You're allowed to deduct the auction price of the car or $500, whichever is greater.  Mine amazingly sold for $1,000.  I think if the charity keeps and uses your car you can deduct the Blue Book value.  NPR also does car donations, I'm pretty sure a kidney disease charity does too.  I really can't remember how much it changed my tax refund-maybe $200 or so?  You could try selling it for a few hundred dollars then donate it if it doesn't sell.

  • DH donated a van several years ago.  He wound up deducting over somewhere between 1200 & 1400, and he honestly thinks he got more out of it that way than if he would have sold it.  I asked DH what he thought of your dh's truck, and his opinion is that it is better to donate it than try to sell it.  GL!
