Stray Dog Story - People Suck

Well, she wasn't a stray, but still... you guys have to hear this story.

This evening, DH was firing up the grill for dinner and all of a sudden, he sees a dog wandering around our porch.  He calls her over and sees that she has a collar and tags but no leash or owner nearby.   She ran right up to him and immediately rolled over for a belly rub. :)  He looked around and thought he had just seen a dad and son walking by, so he assumed it was their dog - this was clearly a dog with a family.  He yelled inside for me to get his shoes and our dog's leash so he can walk him back to the owners (who were now out of sight).  I went with him - we ran up a hill to get to the people we saw, but the dad was on his cell phone and neither he or the son had a reaction to the dog at all, so it wasn't theirs.

There were no other people around and neither of us had our cell phone to call the number on the tag.  We recognized the street address on her tag, so we thought we'd just walk her back to her home.  We didn't realize it was almost a mile away!  The road was close to our apartment, but it went really far back to get to their house number!  We were trying to hurry, assuming they were worried and/or already trying to find her.  We get to the house and we can tell the dog knows it's her home - she ran right up to the door!  We ring the bell and it sounds like nobody is home.  In fact, so much time passed that I said to DH, "oh no, they're already out looking for her."

Before we turned around, someone finally came to the door.  It was a young girl, probably in middle school.  She looked at us with a "what do you want" expression and DH actually had to say, "Um... is this your dog?"  She said "oh, yea," grabbed her by the collar and pulled her inside... and then shut the door!  We could barely get our own leash off of her before she shut the door on us!  No "thank you!" no "ohmygosh, we were so worried!" no "where did you find her?" and no "she does this all the time..."  NOTHING.

DH and I were stunned.  We stood on the porch for a few seconds and then just walked back home.  That's horrible, right?  I'm still stunned and I can't stop thinking about it.  I hope she runs away from home again - we're keeping her if she comes back. :)
