Random: Are there any South Carolina nesties.

DH and I were just talking about moving.  He would LOVE to live somewhere with really good fishing and I think I could live in South Carolina.  This will probably never happen but where could we live that the COL would be low and not too far from the coast?  Within an hour would be awesome.

Re: Random: Are there any South Carolina nesties.

  • My absolute favorite place in SC is Charleston. I would move there in a heartbeat if possible. IDK what you and DH do for a living, but the only industry right there is tourism it seems. So maybe a bigger city a bit more inland?
    Anniversary
  • I live in NC but frequent Charleston.  What exactly would you like to know about SC?  What kind of work does your husband do?
  • He's VP of an office cleaning company.  I'm an interior designer.  We were talking about moving somewhere inland where the cost of living is low so that we really wouldn't have to make a lot of money.  Maybe even live off of what we have for a while until we found decent jobs.  Again, this all talk and we'll probably stay where we are.  Stick out tongue  I've never been to Charleston but I think I would really like it.
  • Honestly the cost of living isn't cheap in Charleston.  Have you considered Wilmington, NC?
  • We really havebt considered anything. I was looking for suggestions within an hour of the coast where the cost of living was low.
  • I think you need to consider what kind of area you want to live in as well.  Most things within an hour of the coast of either NC or SC are not metro areas and usually don't have a wide variety of shopping, restaurants, etc.  In fact a number of the areas are extremely poor. If you are okay with that I can give you plenty of suggestions.  Also, there are a few exceptions - New Bern, NC being one of those.

What kind of fishing does your husband like?

  • I just moved out of SC last October.  The unemployment there is very high.  I was in Columbia, in the middle of the state.  It is tuff to get "in" there because it is a good old boy network down there.  They like to hire their own.  Myrtle Beach is another area to consider for fishing.  It is cheaper to live closer to there than Charleston.  Charleston is wonderful buy the COL there is higher than the rest of the state.  Columbia is about 1.5 hours away from Myrtle Beach and two hours from Charleston.  If you have kids or planning to have kids, then you might want to take the school system into account.  SC is at the bottom of the barrel for education.  However, their homeschooling laws are liberal.
  • Being from SC and living now in NC, I echo that Charleston is awesome, but expensive. They thrive mostly on hospitality and well, when the economy isn't doing great, neither are places that live off it. I will however add that we often say that when we are ready to retire, we hope to head there. It's so pretty. I think you might be better to check into small beach communities but consider finding a job before moving. I've seen the market and it is taking a while to turn back around. GL!
  • We would definitely find a job first but would be willing to do something that doesn't pay well for a while. He likes any kind of fishing. We're used to living in a major city with a HOL and are interested in something slower pace and more rural.
