XP: The wonders of Hospice

My grandmother (who can no longer speak and is virtually bed-ridden at this point) got a visit from a Hospice volunteer yesterday.  This volunteer was neither a nurse nor a health aide; she was a hairdresser.  She cuts hair for those that are ill or homebound. My grandmother always has been very conscious of her appearance and her illness has been a total blow to her vanity and self-esteem. This visit, I am sure, was a total treat. My mom sent me a photo of her with her new haircut and she is smiling from ear to ear in the picture.

Needless to say, I am making a donation to the Hospice organization in honor of that smile.

Re: XP: The wonders of Hospice

  • That is such a wonderful thing!  My co-workers mother made her promise that even when she is unable to care for herself, she wants her daughters to pluck her chin hair for her.
  • Omg, that just brought me to tears. It had never even occurred to me that a hospice volunteer would be anybody that wasn't in the medical field.  I could totally see how somebody unexpected like this could make someone feel wonderful with the time they have left.

I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother Amy.

  • I think that's so wonderful!  It was hard watching my grandmother deteriorate, especially for someone who was so concerned about her appearance.  Something like this would have been wonderful for her.  I am glad to hear your grandma got it.

  • I'm sorry to hear your grandmother isn't doing too well Amy. But, I'm happy she can still smile with all she is going through! She's in my thoughts and prayers! =)

I work in a hospital (as you know) and they also have hairdressers come in for patients that are in the hospital long term that would like a haircut or even a shave...a little gesture goes a long way.

  • Amy I am sorry that she is not doing so well.  I know how you feel, my grandma has advanced alzheimer's and it is so hard.  I am glad she had a good day.  That is wonderful. :-)
