If blondebride was really that concerned about saving a life from possibly being ended...then she should just use a damn condom. Otherwise, she's being hypocritical.

Actually we do use both BC and a condom.  So I am not a hypocrite, but thanks for the accusation...

Re: gr8orbride's magical fool proof method of BC

  • She should totally be a doctor.
    "I
  • Why didn't she just say this from the freaking beginning instead of saying "Oh well I don't know that the egg has fertlized so I can't be held responsible." Why didn't she just say "we use a condom so there is no statistically feasible chance of even having a fertilized egg."???

Oh that's right, b/c she is making this shit up as she goes along.

    Boo.

    i hate condoms.

    I hate morAns.

  • Oral Contraceptives + condoms fail 0.36% of the time.  Not bad, but not as effective as abstinence! ;)

I actually wasn't aware that condoms prevent ovulation.  Back to the books for me!

By fail do you me result in pregnancy? Just curious.

Yes, pregnancy.  Condoms have a 12% fail rate for pregnancy alone, and BCP have a 3% fail rate.

BCPs don't protect against STDs, and I don't know condom fail rates for STDs.

  • I wasn't suggesting she should use a condom to stop ovulation...:-P

I was suggesting she use a condom so she didn't have to worry about fertilization in the first place.

Frankly, I'm not about to suggest she stop using any form of bc. The longer she stays out of the pool, the better off we will all be!

Condoms have a 12% fail rate for pregnancy!!??? What?! That's not what they said on Friends!!!

  • I think the fail rate includes breakage or slipping off.  It's much lower if it stays intact and on.

I am shocked that there are some people who get pregnant while on the pill and using condoms.  Those are some fertile people.

  • Fenton is correct. From wiki:

The typical use pregnancy rate among condom users varies depending on the population being studied, ranging from 10?18% per year.[95] The perfect use pregnancy rate of condoms is 2% per year

  • So, for purposes of gatorgirl's point, what are the chances of using a condom and using a BC pill that then results in a fertilized egg that cannot implant (due the the BCP) that then gets disposed of during the menstrual cycle? Anyone have data on this specific situation?

Birth control rates are typically expressed in "typical use" rates and "lowest expected" rates. The wider the gap, the more user error is involved in "typical use".

Random tangent: withdrawl and FAM have huge "typical use" rates, but very low "lowest expected" rates.

Yes, I gathered that from the wiki article. Wink

  • Yeah, all the numbers I quoted were for typical use as that's what we use in reality. ;)

As DH put it, for perfect use [of BCP], you'd have to basically be in a lab.

Whatever, withdrawal totally works awesome. Stick out tongue

  • That's not magical.  That sounds pretty darn fool-proof.
  • OK, I finally read through that huge thread.  I have to say that when she said this about using a condom my first reaction was she was definitely lying.

Now, I will admit that you guys have gotten me thinking.  I would never push for making BCP illegal, but I can see the concern that you have.  I would only say that there is no way to know that an egg was fertilized or not (in the case of contraception pre-implantation), so I don't see how this could become a valid lawsuit (unless I'm missing something completely).

FWIW, we do not use contraception (unlike GR8r...whatever her name is).  Granted, we're 42 and it would be a dumb time of our lives to do so if we ever want to have a child...but we would still not use any contraception if we had married much younger ....because of our faith.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
