NER: bubble-tea

Am I the only one who has a strange unnatural obsession with bubble tea?

I'm scoping out new flavor recommendations - - today I had honeydew and OMG it was delicious!

Funny you asked this! I went out to get Thai for lunch today down in Chinatown and saw someone drinking it and thought, I do not like bubble tea, how in hell are people drinking that?

  • ok fine I googled it.

I need to find a place that sells this!

  • I looooove that stuff. My favorites are the milk teas: coconut, peanut and almond...mmm.

    We have a St. Alp's nearby http://www.saints-alp.com.hk/products/pdt_d_forthytea.html

  • the amazing thing about bubble tea is that most places have it in an amazing variety of flavors... literally DOZENS...

so, what it is - iced tea (black or green) with flavoring (usually fruits, or dessert-y flavors like vanilla or chocolate) blended to be smoothie or milkshake like...

with yummy pearls at the bottom that you suck up through a big-azz straw (tapioca usually - - which is delish, even though I ordinarily hate tapoica)... the place where I get it also has little balls-o-candy, so you can get things like passionfruit balls (they burst in your mouth)

    the stuff is insane...

I think in most cities its pretty hard to find outside chinatowns... but check it out if you get the chance...

I'm really trying to see if others have favorite flavors, because trying everything that "sounds good" seems too daunting.

  • Ahh. I'd never heard of it as "bubble tea" either.... only Thai Iced Tea.
  • I tried it once. I loved the actual drink, but hated the tapioca pearls. They tasted like plastic.

  • Apparently I'm in the minority, but I am not a fan.

If the tapioca isn't cooked right, it ruins the whole drink.

I like the almond. It's my fave.

  • I'm not a huge fan, although I always laugh when I think of the name b/c I saw a Martin Yan show that highlighted the drink.  His accent turned it into bobble tea, and I like that term :)

I had a fabulous bobble tea in Tokyo that was this great green tea pomegranate flavor.  I just think the bubbles are too big and numerous most of the time.

  • The name "bubble tea" refers to the bubbles that result from the making of the tea, not the tapioca balls. These tapioca balls are referred to as "pearls" or "boba," which is the Chinese slang equivalent of "boobies" or "titties."

    Delightful, I know.

The original bubble tea was simply sweetened black tea with milk. After the craze caught on, more flavors came into being.

I am a boba fanatic. It did come from Taiwan, after all.

And, if anyone is wondering if AO6's cover has been blown, it has not. I simply stumbled onto this New Improved E08 Board because I was bored and actually got married in August 2006.

Didn't expect to see all this!?

Hi, WeezerMonkey. I remember you from somewhere... BNOTB, maybe? Or H&F?

    Definitely not H&F.
    That makes my lard-ass giggle.

I haven't posted on BNOTB since near its inception.

These days I'm probably on MM the most and sometimes visit F&B and Travel.?

It must've been BNOTB, then. I haven't been back in ages, but I did hang out there for a hot minute.

  • We have several bubble teas places near my home. I have tried it once and it was okay but nothing special.

My son loves it though. He tries all the different flavors. But this is the boy who won't eat salad or vegetables or roast or meatloaf or most normal things. His favorite food is sushi and he loves escargot or any other unusual item that I can't make for dinner.
