where to ride?

I know there are at least a couple of bike riders around here.   I'm fairly new to road biking but it is something my husband likes to do.  Where do you ride?  Honestly I'm not super confident about true road riding here yet because of the traffic but are there any paved areas that are part of the greenway or something like that where I could gain some confidence?  We're in NW Raleigh.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

Re: where to ride?

  • DH recommends the American Tobacco Trail and also to check out http://www.trianglegreenways.org and the town of Cary website and search for greenways on there is all kinds of information as well as maps! He says that Cary and Raleigh both have good greenway systems.  DH is a cyclist and I've just started riding on the road with him! Enjoy and be careful! If you have any more questions let me know!!

  • American Tobacco trail is really nice, but kind of out of the way from North Raleigh (~25 min drive) and very flat which I think would be kind of boring.  William B. Umpstead park has some great bike paths that can be accessed from several locations including the entrance off Glenwood in Raleigh and entrance off Harrison Avenue in Cary. You can look up maps for Umpstead, be sure to look for the "bike and bridle" paths.  The ATT and Upstead paths are both a fine gravel. There's a path that runs from the Art Museum along Reedy Creek Rd into the park, though part of it would be on a sidewalk, you can see that path on the Raleigh Greenway Map.  There are also some excellent paved greenway paths throughout Raleigh, check out the Raleigh greenway map here.
  • Shro--I'm in the Triad, so my suggestions won't help much, but I wish you a safe and fun ride!  If you have any other general cycling questions, don't hesitate to ask!
  • Thanks for all the suggestions ladies!  Sarah
