I just went to my orientation for my tutoring job that starts today. She told me when I interviewed that I will have 2nd grade and have about 10 kids. Well, this morning she told me I am teaching 1st-5th and I have like 50 kids, AND i am the ONLY one tutoring!!!!! She told me to put them in groups and work with each group for an hour at a time. She gave me all their books and they are all on different levels. How am I supposed to teach this?! I am going to group them by grade levels and try to work with them that way. She said she is working on hiring others to help and then my load will go back down. I feel like they lied to me to get me to work there and now they are dropping all this on me. Also, I work at the boys and girls club and she said alot of the kids are VERY defiant and if I have a problem let her know. I am SOOOOO NERVOUS!!! I have to go at 2:30-5:45 today. I am sooo freaking out.
Meet Moses, one of my many babies!

Wow. Well...first of all, breathe! You'll feel better.
Then...could you pair some of the older kids with the younger ones?
I would go in today with an "I'm going to assess this situation" attitude. You just need to survive this week, then you can go in next week with some experience/understanding and a plan in place.

It is and that's where I thought I was going to be until I was interviewed. They told me I was going to be working with the boys and girls club about 30 min from my house and I was going to have a small group of 2nd graders that I tutored everyday. Now, its every grade and theres tons of kids!! I got a complete game plan ready for today and wrote down everything, I am going to go over rules, do a get to know you thing, etc.
I am going to tell them that I am pulling groups based on their grade level for an hour at a time, and the people at the boys and girls club can handle the rest till I come for them. That way, I wont have so many at once. I hope I survive...

Look, I know a job is a good thing to have, but they have gone and changed the job you interviewed in such a way that I think you would be justified in just plain quitting and keeping the job search. Frankly, I would outright refuse to work with that many more kids if that is not what was agreed upon. Some of the additional kids? Sure. All of them? Absolutely not. And as you were lied to in your interview, I would be leary of any promises they make as to any additional help you will receive.
But you have to do what is right for your situation. 50 kids is perfectly doable, since they'll be in smaller groups, it just requires a lot of planning and organization. Work to group them by similar ability levels.
Ditto. I'd be pissed. That is SO shady, they outright lied to you. If their plan was for you to do everything until they hired 3 more people, they should have been upfront about that in the interview. I would ask for a temporary raise for the extra work you are doing (until they hire more tutors). You were hired for 10 students, and when you get there, you find out you are responsible for five times that. That is crazy!
My guess is that they tried to hire you all together, which is why she gave you such a low kid-count.
