Dh and I are considering a move from Vancouver Island to Windsor, On. Is there anyone that lives there or close by that could tell us about it? (as far as jobs, housing, neighborhoods...) OR is there anyone that has done a cross country move that has advice? We are planning on shipping our stuff and buying most new. Is this a good idea?
My family lives in Michigan and DH is a Canadian citizen so we are trying to get as close as possible without going through immigration. ANY help would be appreciated. TIA!
Re: Moving Help Please
There are a few ladies who live in Windsor who can probably give you lots of advice.
I used to go to Windsor all the time for work a few years ago. They are heavily into the auto industry so the job sector is really kind of crap right now. If I had to pick a place to move to I wouldn't pick Windsor just based on that.
What industry are you guys in? There are other spots you could move to that are within a few hours of the border.
I live in Windsor, never done a cross country move though.
Moving from the Van. Island to Windsor. Boy, will you be disappointed. When it comes to scenery anyway.
Do you have any specific questions? Are you buying a house or renting? I can give you some advice about neighbourhoods.
The job market is kind of bleak, but it is getting better. What industries are the two of you in? If you have dual citizenship that will be helpful because it opens up many doors in the Detroit area as well.
Feel free to PM me or page me on this board. I check it a couple of times a day.
I've lived in Windsor and the surrounding areas my entire life, so feel free to PM me, as well.
As others have said...the job market is bleak right now. I believe we have the highest rate of unemployment in all of Canada at close to 15%. Cost of living is pretty low, though. If you are looking to go to the University and live around there, you can find some cheap rent but it isn't the best part of town.
There is actually a big call centre in Windsor that just opened a few years ago. The turnover rate is high, but it sounds like you aren't looking for a career anyway.

Luckily, the vacancy rate in Windsor is high and you should be able to find something of a decent size, around the university, for a pretty good price. I'm sure if you looked at the university website, you could find some postings re: housing. If you find a few things, you could let us know and one of us Windsorites could give you a few opinions.
Totally - London has more to offer currently than Windsor given the job market there. And housing is still fairly reasonable (approx 150K for a decent 3 br bungalow)
Hmmm I didn't know there was a waiting period to become a resident of Ontario. That is interesting. I wonder if it is just OHIP or other things too?
Have you looked on www.indeed.ca for jobs? They pull all the ads from other job boards.
