Poll: Who won the debate?

Who do you think "won" the debate tonight?[Poll]

Re: Poll: Who won the debate?

  • I voted Palin mainly b/c my expectations were very low.  I did a pretty good job of ignoring the Couric interview until this morning, and that set the bar.  With that said, I believe that Biden presented more substantial responses and seemed more knowledgeable on issues.  Apparently I have made up my mind as to who I will vote for in November.
  • The CNN post-debate discussion with undecided Ohio voters is really interesting. Most of them thought Biden won. Several people were swayed by the VP debate to vote for Obama now. One person was swayed to vote for McCain.

  • I'm finding it sad that we're only calling it a tie because our expectations were so low for her.

That's not to say, however, that she's wasn't a really good public speaker.  Especially once she got over her intial nerves (and once she's been given some idea about the questions she might be asked).  I don't like, however, that she failed to actually answer so many of the questions she was asked. Sad

ETA: By "we" I mean me, too.

FOX was the exact opposite with their group.  How do these news organizations manage to find undecideds who say exactly what their viewers want to hear?

Okay, I'm really not trying to be mean, here.  But I would refuse to believe ANYTHING Fox says about who won anything at this point that wasn't supported by hard numbers - after that "the room is split" clip the other day....

  • Hm, I thought Biden won no question. And FWIW I did not feel as strongly about Obama's performance on Friday.
  • Biden definitely came across smarter, but Palin was much more likeable. ?And I thought she would be a total disaster but she wasn't. ?Yay.

  • Biden definitely showed his experience but Palin got her limited experience across pretty well. She was very personable but there were times she did seem nervous. Biden looked comfortable the whole time.

I think Biden did better even if I don't agree with his policies.

DH, Mr. Independent Undecided, thinks it was a tie.

  • I think I agree with Charles Krauthammer--Biden won for substance, but she won for style.  He also mentioned, and I agreed, that Biden was too over the top with blamming at the end whereas she softened so I think she won points there.  I think it was a tie, leaning Palin because I think she held her own well against a great debater.

  • I say "tie."  He did better on Foreign Policy, but she did consistently well overall.  I also thought she controlled the debate--I'm sure the idea was "let her talk, she'll flub it up," but instead, she seemed to take charge of the tone.

All in all, well done on both sides.  I actually enjoyed listening to them over Friday's debate.

I'm also quite pleased--to me, she showed the Palin I believe in.  A little unpolished, but smart and strong.

  • Biden hands down. Palin wasn't horrible and she certainly was better than her interviews would suggest, but still, she still doesn't sound as if she has a good grasp of the issues, she is talking point driven, and she is way, way, way too freaking folksy. Gotcha. Gonna. Giveya. Plus, I hate people who talk through smiles. It is freaking annoying.

On the other hand, Biden seemed to know what he was talking about immediately, he didn't sound as he was reading from talking points. His answers were concise, coherent, and clear.

I have to say that Biden's win is clearer than Obama's win last week.Obama won last week b/c really the two merely tied (and a tie was a win for Obama). Here, no doubt, Biden won b/c he is simply a better debater.

  • I went with tie.

Honestly, I don't know if I've ever enjoyed a debate so much.  Palin way exceeded my expectations.  It's clear she worked really hard and she really came through tonight.  While I thought she was definitely lacking in substance, she had some good zingers and really connected, so good for her.

But Biden exceeded my expectations too.  I have not been a Biden fan, but tonight I was really, really impressed.  I thought he was terrific.  He knew McCain's record so well, and the way he used it was amazing.  I was really feeling the love for him.

  • My other problem with Palin's delivery was that she tries sooooo hard to be cutsey. The smiles, the side eyes to Biden, the batting of eye lashes. This isn't Miss America, Miss Alaska.
  • I went with Palin. ?She performed way above my expectations. ?I am now much more comfortable with her.

However, I would probably think Biden did better if I didn't strongly dislike the man and consider him a smug SOB. ?I have trouble erasing impressions of people that I have held for years.?

Wait a second... ?A tie was a win for Obama, the head of the ticket, who is a known great speaker, in granted a foreign policy debate, but which 41 out of 90 minutes of ended up on the economy, but a tie was a "clear" loss for Palin, who is completely new to the political scene and blew all her major interviews before now. ?

    I don't get that.?

  • Biden, hands down. I kept track, and Palin actually answered exactly one question. Biden not only answered the questions (at least for the most part) and seemed knowledgeable about everything he was talking about and it was clear he had thought everything through.

Palin proved that she can recite a script and when thrown something that doesn't fit that script, she'll ignore the question and go back to her script. She also proved she doesn't know what "achilles heel" means.

I went into it with an extremely open mind and I wanted to smack her for the whole 2 hours.

  • I think Biden won hands down. I refuse to give her a tie just becuase people had low expectations. That is not the way this works. I think she did fine, and she was certainly better here than in the interviews. She had obviously done lots of prep and had her talking point, mostly on energy, down to a science. Good for her. But Biden actually answered the questions and do so very very well.

If the tables were turned and Biden was the conservative and had given her answers, people would be reeming him today.

  • Not only did Biden win big time, but I wasn't even that excited about Palin from my low expectations.  She had canned answers, and she'd clearly been coached.  I doubt any of those were independent thoughts in the least.

She has no political savvy, and annoys the living hell out of me.  Also, she was a total See You Next Tuesday after Biden's extremely touching moment about his family.  It's clear she was effing clueless about his life.

I think there may be some miscommunication. While the Obama/McCain debate ended in a tie (IMO) I think that Biden was the clear winner last night (i.e .no tie).  Again, this is just my opinion. I don't know what the pundits are saying this morning.
