Help Please - Potty Training

My DS is 3 in May and I have been potty training him for the last 2 and a half weeks. Problem is that he is no closer then when he was when we started. I started by going cold turkey and putting him in underwear (except for naps and bedtimes). I take him to sit on the potty at regular intervals and if he has to go when he's there he pees or poops in the potty. However if he's not on the potty then he just goes where he is. It doesn't bother him at all either he just keeps running around until someone notices he's wet and then he changes into a new pair of underwear. I'm really frustrated and I'm tempted to put him back into diapers because I'm not sure he's ready but he's almost 3 so he should be!

Re: Help Please - Potty Training

  • It is super typical for boys to not be trained until closer to 4.  I think that I would take a step back away from the potty training for now.
  • We had the same problem at 2 and 3 years old, so both times we just steped back and put him in diapers/pull-ups again. What ended up working for us was at 3.5 years old, we started talking about him going to pre-school.  He was really excited about this.  The catch was that he knew that he would have to be potty trained before he could go to school.  So one day that summer, he came to me and asked me if he could wear "big boy " underwear that day.I set a timer for 1 hour incements and every time the timer would go of, he would have to try and go potty.  He had 1 accident that day and that was it....it was completely potty trained(even night time)!

What I learned from this was that it is true, what they say, when they are ready, it will just happen.
